Overheard at BMW Battersea this morning....

I quote:

"Bit of bad news - You will need a complete new engine and exhaust system.... The cost will be £16800... Yeah, well that's water damage for you... I can do you a little discount, about £300 to £400... We can repair your car, but it will cost as much as I said..."

Don't know what car it's for, but ohmygod - £16800??!!

You can buy a 2 year old 750i for £16800 with a nicely run in 5 litre V8.

Nuts.

Must have been someone's pride and joy that was submerged in the floods.

Must be charging for a lot of labour, or a full interior, engine etc.

I got my previous car a bit wet going through a flood by my parents house (320d sport coupe) had it recovered to the garage as turn over but not start and I didn't have any warning lights.

Anyway in the end all it needed was a new air mass meter and a few other bits but before they finished the inspection they gave me a quote for what it could come to before they finished checking, there was other bits and pieces but the bit that stood out was £3500 for a new turbo thank god they said the turbo was ok!

I did ask though just to scare myself how much a new engine would have been as they said it was extremely close to going down the air intake and the service guy said you wouldn't have had much change from £12,000!!!!

Funny thing was the flood was more like a puddle (it was all over the road) and i went through it extremely slowly and came out the other side then about 50 yrds down the road it cut out.

Also where my parents live flooding is a regular occurrence even when the rain isn't that bad so i was use to driving through water

happened in Jan earlier this year in the end it cost me £600 for all the repairs and that included £170 for fog Lights!!!

Whilst i was there, talking to the service manager a lady had wrote her new mini off going through water the day before and she had only had it a month!

STAY AWAY FROM WATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Possibly not - my mate's engine has just been replaced (fortunately its a lease car) as he had water get in through the air intake whilst driving on the motorway (it was very wet). He hit a patch of standing water at 70 and the intake took in enough spray to screw the engine!!!

Bit pricey for an engine alone.

This was a problem with some of the earlier V6 Sierras, with a very low air intake trunk. Going through what seemed like reasonable depth water would syphon the water directly into the cylinders and the subsequent attempted compression of water - bang.

Funny thing is water on its own isn't particularly damaging to engines. Water and compression is not good. Water and time (rust) is also a bad thing. You dont need to completely strip the engine down and if you do it right the actual lump itself should be good as new. Its probably a lot quicker and easier for BMW to toss in a complete new engine than fix everything, lot of electrical ancilliaries wont take kinly to being dunked.

Nowt to do with water but, it reminded me of an incident years ago, of a friend borrowing a compression tester from me (Gunsons, I think).
To see if the oil rings were ok on an engine, I told him to remove the spark plugs check the compression of each cylinder. Then squirt some oil in each pot and do it again.

Like a tw@, he filled the first pot with 20/50 and cranked the engine over....

There was nowt left of the compression test, but he escaped serious injury and nothing in the engine bay ever went rusty after that!!

A mate of mine with an S4 drove through a puddle a couple ago and managed to trash his engine. So it looks like it is more common than your think!

I had a puddle incident about 14 years ago. Hit about a foot of standing water in my old man's company car. Blew the glow plugs, cracked the block etc etc. It was a 2 litre non turbo, automatic citroen ZX and I don't think the old man was too impressed with my unrepentent attitude of "Well it deserved nothing better - piece of rubbish" - truly awful car....

On a serious note I was told at the time that diseasels were more prone to this as the air intakes were (are?) positioned lower to scoop up more air.....

Sounds a bit unlikely. Maybe oil burners are more prone to it because they run much higher compression ratios so the engine needs to ingest less spray before it goes pop?

Edit: Oh wait, is it because diesels are almost farm machinery and a lot of drivers drive them like that?

I drove an astra van through a 4foot ford at 1 in the morning seep 06 and almost made it out the otherside.

Had hydralic lock. AA man the next morning took the air filter out which was soaked, hoses from the intercooler which were flooded. Took one glow plug out at a time and turned her over, water squirting out of the cyhlinder like a ''geezer'' in morocco or something,

Did it to all 4 cylinders and she was fine for another 30k before got rid.
