Pathetic JB3 stock turbo "melter map" dyno results :)
For all you JB3 owners, and n54 enthusiast in general
From the man himself!: (Terry) Hey guys, Been kicking around a 1.3 “melter map” and figured today would be a good day to go do a few pulls. Our previous melter map was based on 1.1 (it did 422rw on the 135i), so we really had to start from scratch to safely control these boost targets with the new 1.3 PID system. The test car is our 135i automatic with 32.1 ECU software, Riss exhaust/downpipes, BMS intake, Code 3 intercooler, ~100 octane, and K1 rims w/ drag radials (@ 32psi tire pressure). Basically how we drive it with more octane. No meth, no turbo work, no spraying the intercooler, etc. All off the shelf normal parts that most of you probably have or could have tomorrow. Dyno room temps were around 72-76 degrees throughout the runs. Boost on the chart is around 17.5psi. Actually made more power at 18-18.5 but started having diverter valve problems (still on the stockers… haven’t learned my lesson yet), so I had to bring it down. I purposely left low end boost around 13-14psi. Needless to say with cooler weather, more boost, higher octane, more tire pressure, and perhaps meth we can go higher on the stock turbos. I know there is a 460rw in there… just might take some time to coax it out. At the very least we’re getting good experience controlling ridiculous boost levels with the JB3. ------------- |

That 4400rpm VANOS transition event is really smoothed out. Dunno if that's the octane or he's figured something out he ain't tellin no one? This doesn't hold peak power up until redline like the ASR turbo upgrade dyno we just saw but then again for a couple of thousand dollars cheaper - this is a mighty incredible second place.
Its baffling how all the old perceptions of what this engine can take all being thrown out the window with these extreme tuners. We need more examples of this stuff in the real world before we call this bullet-proof but dam its impressive. |

One of the really exciting things is that the tranny's are holding up very, very well under these blasts of low end torque. The fact that it hits so fast is tough on them.

Verry impressive. However, the thing that worries me is the durability, reliability of the turbos at such boost levels... There haven't been any long term testing, as far as I understand.

This worry has been around since the beginning of the aftermarket tuning of the N54. There are a lot of cars on here running 15+ PSI with mods with some really good reliability going on 50k+ miles. I don't think no one truly knows until stuff starts blowing up.. I'd rather the tuners blow shit up versus customers

Awesome. Looks like he's cutting boost back pretty significantly after peak power so as not to really spin the turbos to the moon.
I'm wondering how long it will take before we have any sort of even loosely organized drag racing at a track with a scale so we can really see where the cream of the crop is. I wanna see some side by side tune vs tune grudge racing!

quite impressive. Dont know how much longer those turbos will last though. Being smaller than a T25 (and those dont last beyond 15), even a twin Ko4 upgrade would result in some serious hp gains with a lot less boost.

Do you have any examples of this, or if anyone is out there, could you speak up? I'm not being confrontational or anything, but i fail to believe that there are no instances of these engines failing due to the tune.
I have my car tuned, and plan on doing more with it, but I'm doing so operating under the assumption that what I'm doing is not that safe, and will dramatically increase my chances of having engine issues down the road. I'm assuming most people who rock tunes feel the same. So If there are lots of 50k+ miled cars rocking 15+ psi, I want to know about that! That's fantastic!
