Are they reliable or should we just stick with the 6 speed std box TIA |

Ive had 3 mark 5 golfs with them and absolutely love them - But they are definitely a marmite thing, my mate has had as many MKV Golfs, all manual as he hated the DSG! On the whole very reliable, however I did have mine replaced in my 6 month old R32, but guess I was unlucky.
If you do get it, get it reset so it can relearn your sons driving.

Looking for a ED30
How is it reset VAG ? .Is the DSG like a auto or do you have the ability to change gear .
I am looking for a 2007 /2008 GTI in metallic grey 3dr if any one car point me in the direction of a good one , Would consider a 5 dr , pref low miles 20,000 ED30 would be nice ,I think we want a nice straight GTI with low miles I missed a 2007 silver 3dr GTI ED30 today it had 35,000 miles one owner sold @ £13,500 . The guy had it in for a trade against some megan 250 they offered him £12,500 so put it up Private and got a extra £1000 I sort of want a good one for less than £15k am i being reasonable Caffyns have a couple at £18k I think thats really strong money and more than we want to pay . I bought a Brand new Gti in 2008 with 18" Monza 2 and full leather for £19400 All help appreciated Thx |

the DSG can be fully auto or can 'manual' as it has flappy paddles on the steering wheel, and can aslo change up/down using the gear lever (if you would ever want too do that).
its a very very impressive gearbox and goes extremely well matted to the 2.0T VAT engine. effortless driving and you can hardly notice the change ups. there are also clips on youtube showing a manual golf gti vs a DSG golf gti, results are amazing |

I have the DSG in the R36.
The changes are lightning fast, makes normal Auto's seem dull witted and slow. Im a convert the twin clutch boxes now. For me its the way to go now. They are superb.

I also have a MKv Golf with a DSG box, and can agree with most the comment here, it is a fantastic bit of kit.
Just make sure the one you buy has had the oil changed when needed (every 40k for the Golf). I picked mine up a couple of months back for £12500, it's a 07, 40k, 5 door with most the options apart from leather and parking sensors. so you should find one easily within your budget. |

Agree with all the +ve comments on here - the DSG leaves the ZF slush box for dead and is a good case for never needing to drive a manual again.
My next car will be a Dual Clutch jobbie for certain.

I know I'm biased but my mapped DSG Mk5 is the best car I've ever owned, bog standard (even only the 17's) but it just feels right to me in every way, and I've owned much more exotic beasts.
Once mapped the torque is diesel like, it's a properly quick car even without using more than 3000 revs, quicker than an R32 (I've owned one) and averages 32 mpg. Sales pitch over.... |
