Fan only works on lowest temp

My fan blows fine when set to the lowest temperature but when I turn the heat up the fan dies off and just stops. Does anyone know what is going on with my car?

The first to check for is: are you seeing similar things with, say, your seat heaters?
If yes, then you could have a dying battery. Surprising that you didn't get a warning/code though (if this is the problem).

The seat heaters are working good. the top vents still work. When I turn it to 16* it works which is the coldest setting and when I turn it up the fans don't blow. I heard a ticking sound a couple of days ago if that helps.

Okay, problem isn't the battery then.

Can you get access to or do you have a BMW-specific code reader? The onboard computer is an excellent diagnosis machine.
Also double-check your fuses. I'm not familiar with BMW's heater electrical controls, so I don't know if they have separate power buses (i.e. fuses) for low and high heat modes.

Just an idea--I'm fishin' here.

Ok thanks I'll check the fuses tomorrow morning as it's pouring right now. I don't have a bmw specific scanner. I'm hoping it's the fuse. I'll keep ya updated.

I would start with checking your fuses...

I just had this problem. It was the battery. Apparently the car starts shutting off non essential items starting with the blower. Does the heat work full on when you press defrost? If it does its the battery, the car can't turn off the defrost because it's a safety issue. I'd try defrost if it works charge the battery and see if the car then allows the use of the blower fan properly. How old is the battery? It could also be your FSU which controls the blower speed.

It's just the center left and right vents that don't blow when I set the temperature to any higher than 16*. The top vents and defrost etc blow fine. The blower speed works when set on the lowest temperature. I'll check the fuses but not sure which fuse it is.

Ok so fuse is ok..I just realized when I turn on max heat on the drivers side no air blows, anything lower air blows.

Weird, could be the FSU/blower resistor, a fuse or the actual control unit. Other than that not sure what else it could be. Did you check the battery voltage? Dying battery has been known to cause all sorts of havoc.
