When does one need new struts?

Tire place just told me they saw some chop on the rear tires and I should keep an eye on it. They say I prob wont notice anything for another 10-20k miles.

When I asked them when the day finally comes struts plus labor almost 2k on my 2008 BMW 328i ZSP

Car is at 53k

if the car bounces excessively you need to replace them. bounce car, if it keeps rebounding they are done.

you could diy for a lot less when the time comes. most of the lowering spring DIYs show you how to do all this. autozone has spring compressor.

I don't have bounce but I have some extra vibration

This car will hardly bounce pushing on it even with worn shocks and struts. Anything over 60k and they are getting weak. Alot of the E9x cars I have worked on, the rear shocks are so worn at 60k that I can compress the rear shocks with just 3 fingers. No compression left at all. You will start to notice a harsher ride also.
