How many here use fuel injector cleaner?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Also if I decide to do this the procedure is to dump it in on an almost empty tank and THEN fill up right? And of course get an oil change right after. |

You dump it in while the tank is almost empty, but you need to drive it a while. If you add it to a full tank (or fill up right away) the cleaner won't be concentrated enough to do anything!

You aren't likely to feel any difference unless you have a plugged injector that is cleaned during operation but it can remove carbon residue in the chamber as well as cleaning the injectors and valves on non DI engines.

I have used 2 bottles of the stuff since August and have noticed zero difference, i had no issues to begin with so that's probably why. Did it for maintenance. As for changing the oil afterwards i think that's a crock of shit.

I think you guys are confusing this fuel injector cleaner with oil additives that are added to the oil right before oil changes to remove gunk. Fuel injector cleaners do not necessitate an oil change.

I use it for piece of mind I guess. I just put a bottle in last night. I only put it in with about 5 gallons though, instead of 21.
Btw, changing the oil after is a myth. The cleaner does break down engine oil but not nearly as fast as people hype it up to be. |

Would this be the same as the Lucas tune up in a bottle? I didn't know you needed to do a n oil change right away, but logic would suggest filling up on empty so it mixes up well.

Yes, dump it into an empty tank before filling up. It's not necessary to do it before an oil change...it's not like using Sea Foam. I use Red Line's SI-1 Complete Fuel System Cleaner once or twice a year (depending on mileage). I've used Chevron's Techron in the past when Red Line was unavailable...I think that's the active ingredient in the BMW injector cleaner. Anyway, I haven't noticed any real world difference...probably do to having well kept engines and using Shell V-Power, but I still believe it's a good bit of maintenance, especially since it's so cheap.

I've used Techron in my fuel on all of my cars since the mid-1990s...no problems, and it keeps the fuel system cleaned out. Usually put a bottle in before filling up to go on a trip, maybe twice a year.

The reason why it's recommended to change the oil is because by loosening the carbon in the chamber and on valves, some of this carbon ends up in the oil with some of the unburned Techron solvents.
