No problem. At 500-600 miles a tankful, a few trips to DC won't do much. Unless I get egged on to a race with those nasty M3s or 335i/is. Then the mileage takes a dip down to the 25-30 mpg range. But even that it isn't too bad because since we are trailing them, we get a nice drafting effect.

Still, the weight of the tire wouldn't have measurable impact on fuel economy, it has more to do with the rolling resistance of new (thick) tread vs. old (thin) tread. My old factory run flats, at the end of their lifespan, were giving me a 1-2mpg boost in fuel economy, because bald tires have less rolling resistance than thick new tread.

I'm at 23-29 mpg depending on the days, mix of highway and city. I've done 36 mpg on the highway, but sometimes it can be difficult to stay at 120kph for 5 hours with a car like this.
The good thing about this car is that no matter how hard you floor it, you're going to have a difficult time achieving less than 20 mpg on an open road. |

Fellows (haven't noticed any females on the forum),
On Monday I will embark on a long cross-country trip, so I will be posting my results. As mentioned above in this thread (I think), I have done one other 2,000 mile trip in which I got high 30's, with the last leg 40 even. This trip will be roughly as follows: MD to TN, TN to OK, OK to NM, then after that I'm winging it, but some time will be sent around Pagosa Springs, CO, and then I'll work my way back east through CO, WY, SD, etc., stopping in Chicago for a few days, then back via OH. So it could be around 5K. Assuming nothing breaks, I'm guessing I'll be in the high 30's most of the time. I am starting at about 18.5K on the odometer, and I should be getting my Valentine One via UPS today. Looks like only VA and DC are states that prohibit detectors.

Good luck DFan....sounds like a fun trip. Enjoy! Jealous, I love a good road trip and the 335d seems to eat up miles and crave more. On my way back from Pittsburgh Grand Prix the other weekend the Range on the trip computer just kept climbing and climbing despite the fact that I was putting on miles. This engine just loves to move.
On my recent tank, commuter miles 50/50 highway/city I got 32.8 mpg. |

Just got my car, saw 40mpg on a highway run at 75 mph, was very impressed!
But I was shocked how my avg shot up as soon as I did a little bit of stop and go |

This car continues to amaze me. I just finished a 433 mi trip and averaged 35.xx mpg. That may not sound like much but my avg speed was over 85 mph. Yes I had the good fortune to have light traffic and long open straights for safe triple digit speeds.

As a historical data point, I used to own a 1971 BMW 2002 (1997 cc) during 1970-1975 while stationed in Germany. When cruising the autobahns, usually at about 94 mph (that was the sweet spot for engine song and feel), I would get about 18 mpg.
