TPMS -What's needed

If you get a new set, what do you need to get them working?

I just got new set from forum member and installed it. After install I thought I would have to drive some miles, but to my surprise tpms light on dashboard blinked couple times, I restarted the car to make sure everything was ok, drove around the auto shop (like maybe 50ft max) - and light never came back. So I suspect nothing is needed. This was for pre-lci tpms. Not sure if lci is any different

I ordered a new set of winter wheels & tires from Tire Rack with new sensors installed. I didn't have to do anything for them. I also don't have to do anything when I switch back and forth between winter & summer. The system seems to pick up on whichever ones are on. Just get the correct frequency.

There is only ONE frequency for BMW E9n TPMS...but the TPMS protocol does change, with a changeover about mid-2010 builds.

If you have idrive, you can reset the tpms via a menu option

I shopped around and ended up going bavauto....guess I didn't want to order from eBay or websites I wasn't familiar with....got the price for 4, and I thought I saved <$10, but they came quickly due to free UPS shipping...

Yes reset process is a snap but before you reset make sure your pressure on all four are where you want the tpm s set at.
My understanding is that the reset will set the base line at the pressure it reads at the time of reset. Anyone disagree please chime in.

I bought a new set of Huf Intellisens (OEM supplier) from TPMS . com for $120. Town Fair Tire said that they had to calibrate and code them with a special computer, but they didn't charge me for it.

I need new sensors for my 2011 when I get new tires this Spring. The price at TPMS . com looks good, but I was hoping they would come pre-programmed. From your experience, it sounds like the sell you a generic Huf sensor and the protocol needs to be programmed.

What is FTM and can you explain a bit more how this works? I have some 3 pc wheels I'm thinking of putting on and getting tpms on them is a bish so I'd like to know about more options.

Sure, FTM is Flat Tire Monitoring, i believe all the BMWs beginning from 2005 have it, TPMS was mandatory in US.

so, FTM has same functionality, it notifies you when tire is low, but does it in simpler way.

Instead of having sensors and receivers and control module(TPMS), it(FTM) calculates the data based on the information collected by ABS sensors, so it never fails.

I had an 06 325i a few years back with FTM; it's completely useless (only tells you if the tire is completely flat). I spent the money on new sensors because I didn't want to damage my new tires over the long run.

FTM is probably a decent substitute, but know that if you go to sell the car, you'll probably have to get TPMS working again anyway.
