Please HELP! 2008 335XI Ordered....

Ordered a 2008 335XI Sedan with upgrade 18" rims. My dealer just ind. that the 18" wheels only come with performance tires. Of course this was after I asked if all they can come with all seasons and I was told yes during purchase. My concern is that I live in NY and I will be driving this car in the snow. Can I get away with performance tires with all wheel drive in the snow?

absolutley not if it snows. Summer tires turn to rock when it gets cold out.

if its not snowing you're good to go, but wont have the adhesion you did when it was warm. If it snows, pull over. no seriously, you should pull over.

I think so since you have traction on all four tires!!

You're better off with RWD and all-seasons. When it snows, it is all about the tires.

Snow tires > All Seasons > Performance tires

There is even a legal disclaimer on bmwusa.com.

*Due to low-profile tire, please note: wheels, tires and suspension parts are more susceptible to road hazard and consequential damages. Performance tires not recommended for driving in snow and ice.

AWD is a nice option to have, but it only helps if you have all season or snow tires. Seriously, I would ask the dealer to change the order and go with 17" All Seasons instead. You are basically wasting $2000 for an option that is useless because of your tires. The other option would be to buy 4 snow tires + rims and swap them out every season.

Also, I really question the competency of your CA. He should have given you much better advice.

Get all seasons at least. Summer tires cannot even handle temps below 30F.

They get hard, have no traction and are dangerous.

False. On perfectly dry roads the op could probably get away with it (with reduced traction due to the hardness of the tires). With any moisture, the tires will have virtually no grip.

Good tires are way more important than AWD in snow/ice. If none of your tires grip it doesn't matter if 2 or 4 are turning. You'll just slip all over the place. I say change your order or buy a second set of winter tires.

This person is right...and spend the money on "other - DPE/BBK "rims & better tires instead.

Thanks and more info....

Thanks to all for your responses.... To answer some questions, this is the car I ordered in more detail:

2008 335XI Sedan
Prem pac.
Sport pac.
Cold Weather pac.
18" wheel upgrade
IPOD adapt.
Auto w/paddle shift

I went with the sport pac. because I wanted the sport seats and the sport steering wheel. Also I upgraded to the 18" wheels because they look soooo much better on the car, dont like the 17's, and more important I wanted the oil cooler! Which only comes with the sport pac and 18" wheel upgrade. THIS IS TRUE RIGHT??? Some say yes, some no in respect to the 335XI. It better be true.... I have already contacted the dealer and I have the option to replace the performance tires with the all-seasons, at an extra charge of course on the 18's. The wheel upgrade was an extra $600, so its not that bad when your building a $48K car. If I didn't live in the north east I would have went with the 335i, but I have to factor in the bad weather....

Like yourself, I also upgraded to the 18" wheels with summer performance tires.

I purchased a set of 17" style 158 wheels and Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25 RFT snow tires from BMW.

The BMW part number for this tire/wheel combo is 36-11-0-421-680. It consists of 1 wheel with the tire pre-mounted and balanced (TPMS sensor and valve stems are included as well). MSRP is $652.50 each.
