Valve Stem and TPMS

I tried searching but I haven't gotten a straight answer. Are the sensors of the TPMS on the rim themselves or are they on the valve stem? I lost one of my valve stem and I'm just wondering if I should be worried that the system won't work correctly or at all. If someone can be kind enough to tell me, thanks in advance.

Are your valve stems metal? If they are it is part of the valve stem. If they are rubber there are no sensors and it goes by diameter. I'm putting a set of sensors in a set of BMW rims to run all season tires for the winter on my 2008 3.

yeah my valve stems are metal. So I should go to the dealer and get new valve stem? Is the valve stem just to cover the hole or does it detect the pressure?

The stem attaches to the sensor. It is all one piece.

The sensor is a separate part from the stem.

I just bought mine for my winter tires today.

I think I'm talking about the valve cap and not the stem. The metal thing that screws onto the air hole is the cap right? That itself doesn't affect the TPMS sensor? I'm sorry if I gave the wrong info. Another member cleared it up for me. I thought the cap was the stem. Good to know that the sensor is separate from the stem. Thanks to you guys for the quick responses. That's why I love this forum.

Wow, the cap. Yes, that's quite different than the stem, and people lose them from time to time. You can buy new valve stem caps. Buy the BMW Roundel caps if you want to lose them again (they tend to get stolen).

heh, yeah I've read from the forum that couple of people have theirs stolen. I haven't seen any stem cap stolen in houston yet, so I might try to go for the roundel caps. Thanks everyone for clearing it up.

Getting my BMW rims chromed. Am I correct, to remove the assembly, simply"unscrew" the locking collar from the base of the valve stem (on outside of rim), and once removed, the assembly slides out (being removed from what would be the inside side of the wheel rim itself? And, by chance does anyone know the size of the wrench or socket one would use to "unscrew" the locking collar

Thanks in advance for clarifying whether I got this right..

I had mine stolen. Don't know why, they're just plastic. I bought some better looking metal ones but was advised that the metal ones could corrode to the metal valve stem. Put new wheels on and they came with silver colored rubber or vinyl caps. I would bet that your BMW dealer will have them in stock. You'll probably get a set of 4 so you will have some spares. I bet they are overpriced as well but should not cost that much.

I guess I spoke too soon. I just had my valve stems and sensors done today. They are a little different than previously explained to me. It's exactly as the previous picture shows. A machine screw through the sensor into the valve stem holds them together. Them a threaded sleeve over the valve stem keeps them in the hole. On top of that is the plastic valve cap. Only use the plastic cap because of seizing problems between dissimilar metals. This was mentioned elsewhere on the forum.
