189 wheels for a 335 XI question..

So I got 189 wheels with tires. I brought them to firestone to get them put on the car and there telling me I cant be putting wider tires in the rear of the car because its an all wheel drive car. I can ruin the drivetrain. Is this true? I've seen pictures of XI's with these wheels on them all over this forum? I dont get it?

You can use them. Seems to be what most places tell you but judging from this forum, you will be fine. Check out the AWD section for more specifics. The delearship told me the same thing.

The 335xi sport package comes with wider rear tires stock. I know because this is what I have!

I've run 162s on my 325xi for two years with no problems, and no comment from the dealer while its been in for service. Not saying this is the party line from BMW, but staggered setups seem to work fine on xis.

I just put 189 18" on my xi with sport package. 225's on front and 255's on rear. These were spec'd by the dealer. They look great. Go for it.....

Did the dealer put them on for you? I spoke to 3 different places and no one will do them for me. They said I have to go to the dealer and they might even have to change the ECU?

The tire store doesn't know what they are doing. As long as the difference in circumference between the tires is less than 1%, you are fine.

Go to TireRack, look up the tire specs for your tires (search for your tires, when you get to the spot to order them, click on the "specs" hot link above and to the right of the price). You'll see that the rotations per mile will be in the low 800's depending on the brand. Do a % difference calculation, and you'll see there is very little difference. Using the stock Bridgestone 050's as an example (225/40/18 and 255/35/18), one is 827 and the other 830, the larger tire (827 revs per mile) is 0.36% larger.

get in your car and speed away from Firestone and don't ever go back. These guys are clueless. Don't let them go anywhere near your car and that goes for everyone else who is feeding you these lies. They are probably just trying to sell you 4 new tires.

I have an Xi and i run 19s (http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=243463). If you go to BMWUSA.com and build your 3 series in the package tab, click on the sport package and 18" wheels, it will tell you the size they're running (front 225/40/18 & rear 255/35/18).

If bmw is willing to put 18" staggered on the car, you will be fine.

I ran on 235/275 19"s for a year and no problems at all.
