Engine coming into it's own at 2,000 miles

It could be my imagination, but just having exceeded 2,000 miles, the power delivery in my 330i (6 speed, sport) appears to be coming into its own.

Having come from a '98 Audi A4 1.8t (chipped to 200HP), I knew the 330i wouldn't be a rocket ship, but I thought that it would (or should) feel more powerful. At times it did, at times it didn't. I have loved the solid feel, the buttoned down chassis, the six speed manual, etc. However, power delivery had been sporadic at best. As I would get on the throttle, the power delivery would be inconsistent - sometimes it would pull hard right out of the shoot, and it was obvious the variable valve timing would kick into high gear around 4,000 rpm. However, at other times, the power was flat - almost as if the traction control had kicked in - quite disconcerting.

In the past few days however, the power has been consistent and strong. The car feels lighter. It seems to pull harder as the revs sweep, even when the throttle is held at a fixed point mid-way in.

I am now quite pleased - I had not been overly impressed up and to this point. I hope this proves to be the norm and that the engine is settling in. My car has had the latest software update, though I'm confident this has more to do with the benefits of engine break-in.

I welcome the thoughts/impressions of others on their experiences with power delivery.

Wait till your car hits 5000-6000 miles, then the engine will really sing!

just a thought, could it be the fuel that you use to make this inconsistence?

both my engines really came to life at around 4000-8000 miles too, its a beautiful thing when the engine specs fall just into place and the car really performs.

most BMWs do this

AudiA4 my e46's engine seemed to get stronger and stronger as I put on the first few thousand miles... I think that's what you're expereincing.

Is it true that you shouldn't rev above 2700rpm for the first 1200 miles? I have heard different RPMs and different mileage... not sure what's best. Anyone know?

2700 is way too low. The manual says 4500 but going up to 6 once in a blue moon during break in isn't too bad, its best to vary the engine speed as everyone says

Best bet is to follow what the BMW engineers advise in the manual: RPMs no higher than 4500, speed not to exceed 100MPH during the first 1,250 miles or so, then GRADUALLY increase RPM range beyond this point. By 4000 miles the engine should be at full break-in and ready for just about anything you can throw at it (within 7000 RPM of course).

I have an e90 330i. What "latest software update" are you referring to? My dealer has not mentioned anything about an update (not that I think they would given how busy they are).

I was told that the newest "version" is CIP 17.1, but I honestly can't verify if that is the exact version that was upgraded on my car.
