Upcoming BMW Car club driver training event

There's an upcoming Brisbane/Gold Coast BMW Car club event for anyone interested - 8 hours at the track for $170. The times I've been previously I have usually seen a lot of earlier model BMW's plus a few E46 M3's and a few 911's.

I'd go as a spectator as my car only having half an engine and auto slush box would only get in the way of M3's and 911's.

you are divided into groups according to the performance level of your car!!

eg. when I took my E46 323 Coupe there I was in a group with 318ti's!

also, you can normally grab a ride in someone's car

I did the BMW training at Eastern Creek as a guest of a (very kind) BMW dealer in Sydney. I was able to do 2 laps in a 550, 750 sport, Z4M, M3, M5 and M6. At the end, Geoff Brabham took me for 2 hot laps in his (DSC disabled) M5.

This is an excellent opportunity to discover:
  • That traction control really works.
  • That BMWs work brilliantly on a track as well as suburban streets.
  • The actual difference between models. (I loved the feel of the M3 the most. The M5/M6 power was amazing but the cars felt heavy compared to the Z4 and M3)

Even though I thought I was a pretty fast driver, the “hot” laps with Geoff Brabham made me realise just how slow I was.

I would consider the training as more of a high-tech test drive than training. Brilliant fun and part of the reason for my 335i purchase.

Cheers.

I heard numbers of around $600-$800 from the other guys there. Only rumours though. Most dealers get allocated a number of spots a year. You could try talking to your local dealer to see if you can get on the list.

Cheers.

When I negotiated on my 335i, I asked about this, and they just handed me the brochure!! But I managed to get a similar thing, drive a whole series of BMW's around the backroads of the gold coast hinterland, this was the closest I got to a freebie track session!

there are heaps of places for the training. BMWCCV normally has the driver training 3-4 times a year. check their website and u can find out. Other then that, i normally organize DECA with a group of other guys that is a driver training area that is less formal. You use your own car and can choose to have an instructor to teach you different aspects of your car.

Danielt,
It is awesome. Though I wish to see more Bimmers than that. Did you end up joining the training or just the spectator?
I wish I were there.

Yeah, I took it around the track. I started at the back just to give myself some breathing space. They are strict on what you can and can't do to minimise risk of accidents etc, though at the end of the day you have no insurance. You get a good idea of how good the other cars in your group are the more times you go out. Got about 8 x 10 minute sessions for the whole day. Many there had a separate set of "slicks" for the track. The Audi club were represented by 2 new RS4s, a few R32s, a few GTI's. The HSV club had 2 maloo utes, a GTO coupe and an clubsport R8 sedan. There were a few 996 911's - Carerra, Carrra S, and TurboS (not heard of the TurboS). The BMW car club had one E46 M3, a range of modified E36 and earlier models ranging from 318is and a lot of older M3s. There was a 7 too. There was a 335 Sedan with Chiptorque chip and modified exhaust, and body kit. Can't remember the insane numbers he quoted to me on his dyno report, just to say that to him, those mods have made a huge difference. Didn't get a ride in his car myself. I left traction control engaged. I let the RS4 pass on the straight, then tried keeping up with him following his driving lines but he just kept gaining on me! (no surprise!) Some of the modified E36's did well to keep up with the 996 911's. There were hot laps given by the instructors half-way through the morning in the RS4, E46 M3 and WRX, though I didn't manage to get a ride in the RS4. The runflats handled reasonably well but I was told standard tyres will handle better. Oil temp got to a max of about 130 degrees. No fade was evident in the brakes. Managed to get to about 140-150km/hr on the straight. The Golf GTI's and R32's did well.
