Well when the car is parked up and you bounce the front end with just pushing on wings you get nothing. Will try more force on with the doors open.
Driving its usually when you go over speed bumps or a uneven surface and its always on compresion.

well put loads of GT85 into thte tops of the turrets yesterday and went out finally in car today.
First I thought it done it but seems slow speeds its back. Thought now the sound is more uniform and only when say going over a speed bump with both wheels compressed at same time. So looks like its something to do with top mounts. oh well

Again, exactly as I had. Only at slow speeds uniformly over a speed bump or low kerb into driveway. Telling you. Aux dampers.

Sorry noob question here...
I have seen ARB Bushes, Auxiliary Bushes, Bump Stops, Roll Bar Bushes, and Auxiliary dampers mentioned in this thread as the source of the problem. Are they all one and the same just people call them different things or are they all different?

Ok ARB bushes are different to Auxiliary dampers/Bump stops.
Anti Roll Bar bushes (ARB) hold the ARB in place. Bumpstops sit on pistons of the shcocks. Sorry to update jacked up the car the other day, and pulled the aux dampers downon piston. Cleaned the top surace of them and also the underside of the suspension mount where they touch. Applied liberal amount of GT86 to the surface that touches the underside of the mount and the damper rubber. The noise hasnt dissappeared but has reduced by about 90%. Quick fix which should make them last a bit longer. The underside was full of corrosion / oxidiation of the aluminum which could explain noice etc.

With the -40C weather here in Winnipeg, my E91 has started to creak like crazy! Can the weather freeze the grease in the ARB's or affect the rear bumpstops? Would a shot of white grease work?

So had the car in with the dealer for something quick and asked them to quickly look over the front suspension as it was creaking. Told them I suspected ARB bushes or bump stops.
Dealer told me they could hear the creak, tried spraying some lube on the ARB bushes but the creaking was still there, so I would need to book the car in to have it properly checked and possibly even use a microphone type device to pinpoint the creak. So a few weeks later I get the car booked in and they cannot replicate the creak eventhough the same tech worked on the car and agreed it was present before. The only difference was a spell of dry weather before dropping the car in. So low and behold I take the car home over the next few days had some rain and the creaking is back. Now after a few days dry it is gone again... Does this still point to ARB bushes or bump stops? If yes, would new ones react any different in the wet? I might try and see can I replicate the creak by using the power washer to get things wet?

Pretty sure the its the bump stops.
Mine does the same, when wet and going over speed bumps. I had new antiroll bars along with bushes fitted less than 12 months ago so it cannot be that. It doesn't really bother me, have some Birds B3 suspension to go on the car in a few weeks so that should 'cure' the problem. |

At least once the sunny weather comes it seems the issue is temporarily cured.

Just to update since I jacking the car up and pullingthe bump stops and applying the GT86 lube squeek went down to mininum. Recently when doing brakes i applied some copper greace to the surfaces and now the noise has gone completetly. So a win win

How do you pull them down, is it just the case of jacking up the car, and putting your hand up the suspension turrets and trying to grab hold of them?

Basically jacked the side of the car as high as I could to make the suspension drop to max.
Then just pulled the dust cover down and then you just got to free up the rubber bung it will then spin on the damper and you can pull it down to apply the grease. Just case of aligning it back properly when done. My bung was fine dirty but not split or anything. The underside of the mount had a bunch of oxidasation as well combination of this seems to resulted in squeeks. Done over 1000 miles now and no noise . Seems copper grease is the best option in my case Arb bushes are not making any noise in my case so have left them alone. Car currently on 49K

Wish I'd seen this yesterday when I was swapping my wheels back to summer.
Mine has a 'graunch' rather than a creak and only over speed bumps at any speed. Had the pass side done under warranty a couple of years back but drivers has only just started over the winter. I believe it was a big job as they had the car two days and did a full KDS alignment. Might give this a go but I've a BMW extended warranty to use.... Ta |
