It is NOT flammable. But yes, now that I sniff it, it is unburnt fuel and condensation. No coolant, and trace levels of oil, if any.

Thank you for that, I’m guessing that it’s a combination of oil mist, steam (evaporated coolant) and some blow-by exhaust gasses, it’s very unlikely for it to be fuel vapor.
Once I get my own OCC, i can run an analysis in my lab to see what the composition is.

Thanks again

Please keep in contact with me, I am VERY interested to know what you find after 3 months time say..

Also, I dropped 2 little torx bits for my screwdriver set while undoing it to check. I heard a plink like they hit (assumingly) the plastic weathershield at the bottom of the engine bay.
I should really be worried about that right?

You know what they are going to answer:

1. your engine will explode...

2. you are a complete fool dropping these things

3. you should buy a JB4 now because that makes everything better

4. it will keep you more steadier in the corners now because of the weight distrubution being more optimal now

5. you should go to the dealer and ask a refund

I warned you

Does the OCC eliminate the need for walnut blasting on the N54's altogether, or does it just prolong the inevitable? Is the BMS variety the most reputable, or are there other cheaper effective solutions?

I would assume it would slow down the inevitable to a degree.
I am N55, so not sure about N54, I just heard that the oil overspray problem is worse on the N54.
Can someone chime in here and help out?

I had this exact same issue on my N55 135i. I had the same yellowish rusty colored liquid, mostly water with just a bit of oil and maybe some fuel. To me, mine smelled a bit metallic like rusty water. I also had the same issue with the O-ring. I haven't got many miles on mine since I emptied it last but I'll have to check again to see if it has returned.

The OCC wasn't designed to eliminate the need for walnut blasting, but more to prevent oil blow through from clogging up (and reducing the efficiency) the FMIC/CP/DVs or BOV. The PCV on the N54 really doesn't seal that well, so the OCC was designed to filter out the oil vapors before they clogged up other things further down the intake tract.

The BMS OCC is the #1 OCC & the only one "approved" by Rob Beck for use with his turbos

I sold my oil catch can like an idiot. I just bought another one after the Dinan tech told me what the hell are you crazy? It seems apparently that There is oil vapor in there too.

This wasn't, by chance, the same genius that couldn't install an oil cooler properly--was it?

It seems it isn't the oil cooler after all
I blew off some steam thinking it was their fault, but now I'm thinking I jumped the gun. My OCC was removed by someone else, and for all I know they could have tucked the lines in and shifted them around.
I asked the mods to remove the thread, but I guess it ain't happening.
I thought for sure it was that. I am at a loss at this point, as the rattle is still there. I guess I'll live with it, as the car isn't throwing any codes or lights. I dunno man. I'll just listen to my Sirius XM a lot more now.....

Sorry.

Ok, read the whole thread and still confused.
Mine is 2011 335i, N55. OCC or no?

DK, would you do it again or forget it?

According to the DINAN techs at Prestige BMW in Ramsey NJ, yes. To my untrained eye the contents of my OCC was just fuel vapor but apparently I was wrong. They told me they checked an N55 last month with the OCC on it and the build up was significantly less than stock, in some areas bone dry.
It is not a DINAN product, so I would think they would have no vested interest in promoting the worthiness of the OCC unless they saw the results and believed in its effectiveness. As a result, I bought it again, and I am currently awaiting its arrival from Terry.
I am of course going by a DINAN tech, so I would think I should trust his judgement
Yea I spoke too soon on the rattle- the search continues

Without a doubt. Dinan techs say it works. They showed me the internals of their test car out back. That was enough for me. I just re-ordered another one to replace the one I sold. It will go in within the week- I should have it at some point this week. You can't lose anything by getting it- except the byproduct and vapor that could get into your engine parts. Remember, it's not going to magically increase your boost or HP, it is meant to be a maintainence and prevention item to integrate into your overall engine setup. Hope this helps you.

I know this thread is old but I wanted to say "ThanX!" to everyone that contributed. I installed my OCC this weekend. This thread helped me make a good decision for my 335i.
