I'm making an appointment at Bill Jacobs tomorrow. Need to have the passenger side Heated seat fixed along w/ the tire issue. My tires are super loud right now and tramline like crazy. Hopefully I can get contis or any Free tire for that matter....but i have 12,xxx miles right now.

tracfour, which dealer did u go to?

Please Please Please respond back as to how Bill Jacobs reacts to putting Contis on the car. That's my dealership as well.

Much obliged.

Bridgestone vs Contis

I just had my Bridgestone EL42s replaced with Contis. I paid 50% for tires and no labor at 20,800 miles. The Contis were actually $60/tire less than the Bridgestones. I didn't have to argue to get the tires or have Contis instead of Bridgestones. So far I think the Contis handle a lot better than the Bridgestones and back to a quiet ride.

Damn, I have exact same worn-out patterns, but my car ran over 25000 miles already!

I dropped off my car at the dearler just now. I don't know how much they'll charge for 4 tires....

Will they relace any original EL42's (mine are very noisy, but I don't notice any cupping). P.S anyone got a photo of what this cupping looks like?

I just got mine replaced for 50% off with a new set of Turanza's. I had 18,600 miles on my 325. While I would have liked to try another brand of tire, I'm not complaining because the mounting and balancing were free.

Rub your hand along the outside edge of the tread in both directions. It will feel rough on the leading edge of each tread block in one direction of travel. That's an indication of a bad tire.

When I rotate these tires, I will make sure the rotational direction changes and see if that helps in the long run. It's nice to have a quiet car again.

So you mean something like

OUTSIDE OF TIRE (Two Thread blocks shown)

o-----------oooooo---------ooooo
/............../ooooo/............/ooooo
\..............\ooooo\............\ooooo
o-----------oooooo---------ooooo
for a good tire
and for a bad tire...

OUTSIDE OF TIRE

o*****----ooooo*****----ooooooo
/............./ooooo/............../oooooo
\.............\ooooo\..............\oooooo
o----------oooooo----------ooooooo

Where the ****'s indicate roughness?

OR something like...

OUTSIDE OF TIRE

Definitely a rough pronounced lip on the front edge of the thread block. The front two tires are more pronounced. Is this what "Cupping" is??

No problem, I love posting pics.

What color is your xi?

For other XI'ers, Sometimes when I take left turns in the wet a bit more spirited than usual people, I can tell the right rear wheel is spinning, sometimes it jerks a bit and the back end steps out a foot or so. This has never happend in the X-Type, with both the Touring and UHP AS tires. I'm guessing this is due to the crappy Bridgestones? I'm not taking corners overly fast, just trying to use the AWD advantage in the wet.

Thank you ///Matt!!

9,700 miles on, took in it this afternoon to show the wear and they kept the car to replace all 4 free of charge. We were told we could swap for the Conti's but the issues were "worked out" w/ new Bridgestones.
Honestly, yes they were loud, but we've been more distracted by the GODDAMN ticking lifters. That started up again this week, so we will see if they can also take care of that on attempt #2 of replicating the problem.

Brought mine in today too, 12800 miles, will replace at 50% cost. I asked about conti's they said could only do Bridgestones as recall deal was thru bridgestone. $1060 fro 4 tire - 50%, $530 out of my pocket. Kinda lame that they announce the recall when most people alraddy have clocked >10K miles on their tires...

I hope these new bridgestones are better, Service Manager did say problems had been worked out too..

What a rip off!

$1060/4 = $265/tire
At 50%: $530/4 = $132.5/tire
Tire Rack sells these tires for $169 each
... wow, a whole $37 cheaper per tire.

no offense to anyone who replaced their old Bridgestones with a new set of Bridgestones, but this offer doesn't make much sense to me unless I'd get a different tire put on the car. I just don't know that I'd trust that the problem wouldn't return.

Oh well, </rant>

Oh no, we wouldn't have done it if we hadn't caught it under 10K miles.
I'm not gonna turn down a free set of new tires. This will stretch us for another 10k at least. We are having a really hard time picking out new wheels, so this gives us more time to keep looking.
But it sucks that they didn't recall sooner, for everyone who's owned the car for over a year and already trashed beyond the point of free replacement bc of mileage.
