This story has been all over the place. A Chinese man living in the US has been arrested in connection with this issue. It appears that manufacturers in China purchased brand emblems from dealers to make the airbags look genuine. This adds to a long list of Chinese industrial frauds from tainted milk to acid laced drywall. Made in China has become synonymous with buyer beware.

Do you get to choose what caliber it is? If your paying, might as well be springing for the best. Bad joke?

IMO everything we need should be made in the USA, sure would bring back a lot of jobs. But I am sure we have some sort of deal with other country's, that's why we don't.

In the nearly 10 years my car has been assembled, it has never had an airbag go off...

Garage List
One can see in 8-10 years time, if all 8 airbags go off in your car as a result of a minor accident, it will cheaper for the insurance company to write your car off than replace 8 airbags?

I can see where the margin is.

I wrecked a 335i service loaner and those bags & curtains added up really fast.

So I hope this means my 06 E90 is good? If so, I don't get why they would change it after the first year of production???

No a BMW dealer replaced it because the BMW emblem on the steering wheel was fading. So they have to replace the air bag and all to fix it. They did it under waranty so it was free.

I bought my car used, CPO, so who knows if the bags are original or not. Ugh...

NHTSA Video

This is actually quite a serious issue. Just came across a video of the counterfeit air bags being tested by the NHTSA. Disturbing to say the least...

If anyone deserves to get the death penalty, its this guy.
Give people fake wheels, body panels, or even knock off windows etc. But fucking around with air bags, is just sick, whoever finds fake bags in their car, go and sue the shop who replaced it.

Crazy in the video you can see the "H" for Honda flying all over the place, once the bag deployed.

It boggles my mind how almost anything can be made into a Chinese counterfeit. The tell-tale I've noticed is that, almost always, a Chinese counterfeit will have spelling errors on the fine print and labels. Unfortunately for the consumers, you won't know it until after you receive the item.
