I ended up doing the PE after researching the hell out of this. Figured if I get sick of it at least it will hold its value. ar design did the work and I also had their Xi downpipes installed. The PE they had laying in the shop was already attached to factory midpipes with some race cats installed in place of the factory secondaries. The sound is very exotic and loud but there is absolutely ZERO drone. I've tried damn near every gear at varying speeds and I can't get anything that remotely resembles drone even with the windows up and radio off. I've already had a few cops actually give me the thumbs up if you can believe that at all. Not used to positive attention from them, it's a pretty awesome feeling that they approve.
Point of all of this is if anyone is thinking of doing this mod to replicate the PE with DP's installed, DO IT. You definitely won't regret it at all. Just make sure you have a good set of tips installed from Cyba or something. The factory PE tips aren't the greatest and are made of thin stainless material (I almost think a little bit of the RASP I'm experiencing at certain RPM's is directly related to them buzzing around because they aren't thick enough to contain the sound waves). Some pics for you to enjoy.

I read through everything on page 1 but I didn't see anything on where Specificly to buy an X pipe to do this modification I also need to know the size of the piping that replaces the perforated piping so I can buy that to do this modification I have all the tools and welding experience I need so I don't see why I should pay up to $400 to have someone else do this

I don't have downpipes but still looking to perhaps mod my exhaust.
Has anybody done it and kept there stock pipes? Looking to see how the sound compares to stock.

I have stock downpipes and did the mod. Makes a nice difference for sure! With the exhaust flap kept open its pretty loud cold start and WOT and pops a lot when letting off the throttle.

Are the pipes that get replaced inside the mufflers also 2.5 inch? Do we have any specs on these such as length and diameter?

[QUOTE=secretSquirrelOnFirstPage] 1. Q. How much labor does the mod cost? A. You can count on the mod costing anywhere from $250 to $400. A quick estimate of labor time: muffler mod (2 hours), Xpipe install (45min), new tip installation (30 minutes). [QUOTE] |

They are 2.5". I don't know what length. If you're going to a muffler shop they will have TONS of 2.5" piping. Don't let them charge you for that piping (and don't worry about buying it). If you're buying it yourself, I'd count on 15" on each side (I know this is overestimating, but i'd rather aim high and cause you to spend an extra $2 vs aiming short).

So wait do I get the solid pipes myself? Or convince them to use the spare ones without additional cost?...I had 4inch tips installed for about $65..but now since I have the m sport bumper I want the tips more flush and might as well do this mod for my e92 n54 |

Hey thanks for the reply, now I'm getting excited. You left all the packing in?

I also have the muffler mod done, I have stock downpipes and an E90 (no xpipe) at start up its definitely louder and more pronounced pops (waiting on getting my xpipe put in so see the difference). As for the packing, I put 75% in the passenger side and 25% in the driver side.

I finally did this today. I read the whole thread through out the week and I decided to print out pictures and took them to a few muffler shops. I had them replace the outer perforated pipes with straight pipes and remove all the packing, the sound is GREAT, I went by an underpass and WOW from second to third, its unreal what this mod does. I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on any other aftermarket exhaust. Thanks everyone for all the info provided in this thread, it helped make my decision a lot easier. The best $200 bucks I've spent on this car!
