control ipod with car

Sorry another ipod question I know, but I search 'ipod' and get too many results to make sense of. I see y cables, 6fl, dice... makes no sense to me since I can't find a clear explanation of what each is, and I don't know what will work with my car.

Currently have '06 330i with idrive with ipod connected via aux-in cable in the center armrest. How would I go about controlling the ipod through the car, either steering wheel or radio controls, and would songs show up on the idrive screen?

A response here would be helpful, but I know this has to be answered somewhere, so either a link or suggested better terms to search for would be appreciated.

6FL retrofit is your most likely option (this is the USB + Aux jack that integrates into the head unit, allowing you to control your iPod through the steering wheel).

I just had the ipod interface installed in my 2006 330i today and so far I like it. The ipod sits in the glove box. You can control the ipod either through the steering wheel controls or the idrive system. The song, artist, and album are listed on the screen. You can scroll through your ipod by either playlist or artist, or album, or podcast, or song. I've only played with it a little so far, but I like it.

Note that if you get the retrofit they will upgrade the idrive software so you'll lose all your presets. Not a big deal, but you may want to write down your radio settings.

My only complaint so far is that I have a 4th gen nano and the kit won't charge it. But, I'm going to order the Scosche adapter that will charge it. I think the Scosche part is only $20. This brings up another point: the installation of the ipod interface is not cheap, but it works seamlessly with the navigation system (or at least has on mine so far).

Thanks, this sounds like just what I am looking for. Can I ask where and how much this was? Is this the same as 6FL as Ron1n mentioned above? What all is involved with the install?

6FL retrofit has not been released in the states, nor do US dealers have the capabilities of coding them.

Only options are the OTC BMW iPod kit or mObridge, we offer both if needed.

your bmw dealer should have it. That is where I got mine from and where I had it installed as well. I believe Tischer should have it as well. They would probably be cheaper, compared to your local bmw dealer

Or, you can check the thread that's actually in this forum regarding the retrofit that's contrary to your post.

I have the passPort, if you'd rather buy it from me. I don't need it, and it was used for all of 30s. PM me if you're interested.

That is the OTC (over the counter) iPod kit from BMW.

I do not have the idrive but I have the ipod integration and it sucks that I can't browse via album, seems I can only do playlist

edit: lol looks like I am full of fail, after reading the manual, I need to change the slot to get album play

What about for the 2006 e90 without navigation?

I don't have the navigation option in my car (2006 325i sedan). I want to use my steering wheel controls with my iPod tho. Anyone have a link for a product?
Thanks

I think you will need the older Ipod adapter. That is what I used. I think the 6FL only works for newer E90 models.

I just had the BMW iPod kit installed in my '07. Many thanks to Tischer BMW for sending the exact part I needed. Yes, they need your VIN.

I do not have iDrive and it works great as a pretend CD changer through the logic 7.

And only an hour labor at the BMW dealer for installation/programming. They have to do something to the radio to 'look' for a CD changer (which the ipod adapter is pretending to be).

@ juice13:

Which ipod are you using with the ipod integration kit? I have heard issues of new iOS 4 devices not working with the ipod integration kit...

I have a 2007 e90 sedan (Feb built) with iDrive...looking to purchase a OTC ipod integration kit to play my podcasts
