Well, I'm not really worried about idle conditions. Oil cooler thermostat on the N54 opens at around 220F from what I know.

Still gonna stick with BMW synthetic 5w-30. $6.71 a qt after BMW club discount is not too bad....

So I've been a fan of Tischer since I had my Acura back in the day, but this somewhat startled me. I ordered their service kit with the air filters and the oil change kit and got the 07 51 0 017 866 instead of the 07 51 0 002 545. Whats the point of telling them your VIN, etc so that they can ignore the sticker under the hood? Did BMW retroactively change their oil to 5W-30?

http://www.bmwusa.com/Standard/Conte...ngineOils.aspx Does not list 07 51 0 002 545 at all, but this is supposedly caused when BMW switched suppliers from Valvoline to Castrol.

Not quite sure what you mean. Tischer has serviced 4 BMWs for me over the past ten years and they were all filled with the same BMW branded 5w30 that they sell as part of the kit online.

The last time it was a different viscosity was 5w40 in 2001 and this was changed to 5w30 around 2002. So perhaps it was only the part number and not the oil which was changed.

It really is. You can read up all you want about how to please a woman, you can look at all the diagrams in the world, but just like the clitoris, you won't know what the hell an apex is before you actually find it.

Couldn't find an online place that could give a better deal. I think the shipping cost is prohibitive. It is actually a local dealer, New Century BMW in Alhambra.

Get one of these

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I think it actually calls out for an 86.5mm filter socket, but I have two different 86mm ones that fit perfectly. I always hand tighten, nothing crazy for torque and this last oil change, I could not budge the cap. Drove to harbor freight and got an adjustable filter cap removal'tool that just sucked and didn't work. Helped a friend before with his stuck cap, using a strap wrench and after much trouble we got the cap off, but I didn't like how it added pressure and looked like it could crack the cap. So ordered what linked on amazon with free shipping for less than $10 and then found out that pep boys had one on hand I could get that day, so I did. Pepboys had this one

http://www.amazon.com/CTA-Tools-A261...ref=pd_cp_hi_0

Cheaply version and was $5.99 at the store. Right tool for the job and worked fine.

I use Castro 0w30 long life approved. I usually buy for 3 oil changes worth whenever there is a good sale on it and look to restock when I am down to one oil change worth and of course when it is on sale.

You can use castrol 5w-30 full synthetic oil castrol makes BMW oil
Oil from the dealer doesn't cost that much like like 7 or 8 my car takes 8 quarts
So with that and oil filter it comes out to like 75$ u can get it change for 25 so that's a 100 total part & labor

Motor Oil Articles by Dr. Ali E. Haas

After reading "Motor Oil Articles by Dr. Ali E. Haas (AEHaas)", I decided to go with an oil that I wouldn't have considered before:

Mobil 1 0W-20 Advanced Fuel Economy Full Synthetic Motor Oil

While picking this up at the local Walmart at $25 for each 5-quart jug, I also picked up a Fram filter CH8081. This included an o-ring gasket, and a copper crush gasket for the drain plug.

EDIT: The Fram filter was wrong. So, I stopped by a parts store, and picked up what they had. It fit right, but cost a lot more than the Fram. I hadn't heard of Wix Filters. It took Wix 57327 with UPC 7 65809 57327 7.

I just picked up 14 bottles of the Castro GC 0w30 for $6.89/L. I did my first oil change at 15,000kms and the oil seems like it was still good. Not sure if the color makes a difference but I'm assuming the more black it is the sooner you should have it changed. I think I'm going to try and do 17,000-20,000km next and see how it is. I still have enough for 3 more oil changes after I stocked up a few days ago.

For all you Canadians I got it from Canadian Tire. They are on sale for $6.89/L until Thursday I believe.

I would trust a Wix filter waaaaaay more than the Orange Can of Death any day. Wix (or NAPA Gold, same thing) is a quality filter.

But what's your rationale behind going with a 20 weight oil?
