Another near dead E93 325 Cab
Driving to work this morning engine started to misfire throughout the rev range. Pulled over and switched off and restarted again still same, no fault lights. Managed to drive in low gear to work and awaited dealership opening, they suggested ringing recovery as they were busy. Rang Bmw service and they said they would have someone to me shortly. Guy turned up and said did not have diagnostics for new direct injection petrol engines, suggested to drive to dealership and hook it up there by this time engine light is on. Got to dealers unable to put on diagnostics as busy. BMW service then arranged a hire car for me from another dealers 318i D turned up. Called back at dealers in afternoon they think it is an injector but they have sent codes off to BMW and are awaiting reply, looks like monday at earliest, I suggested if the high pressure fuel pump was ok they say awaiting reply from BMW, besides BMW do not have any injectors. Engine starts ok first time but running lumpy and missing what symptoms do others who have had fuel pump failure get ?

Really sorry to hear this - they really need to sort this out and be generally more helpful.
KeithIOW posted some detailed info about his e93 here

Sorry but it sounds like the same symptoms as mine last weekend. If it's the pump chances are you'll be waiting for a few weeks. Mine's been off the road for nearly a week with no confirmation around part availability and I think KeithIOW's was off the road for around 4 weeks.
Let me know if you need any more details and good luck. Miopyk |

It started off by running badly, like it was not firing in one cylinder, then it got gradually worse to the point where it just wouldn't accelerate or run faster than about 20MPH accompanied by lots of shaking and the engine trying to rev by itself. This all happened over the course of about 20 minutes and 6-7 miles including stopping and restarting a couple of times.
I did get a warning light come up which was the engine half lit in amber which according to the manual is "reduced power mode". No kidding, more like 50cc moped mode. Actually I think one of those overtook me at the time so it probably wasn't even that good. Hope this helps. Miopyk |

Miopyk, the 325i coupe/convertible is actually the 3.0i engine isn't it... i.e. its not the same engine as my 325i coupe?

When are they going to sort this out? Mine took 3.5 weeks to get sorted I can't believe they've not recalled them all?! Yeah sounds like the same problem, my car would start and drive but was misfiring and jerky with the engine management light displaying and beeping on the dash

Basically from the evidence seen so far it's the new direct injection petrol engines, which means E90/91 335i and all petrol E92/93 (320i/325i/330i/335i).
The problem is with the high pressure pump in the engine bay. There is a low pressure pump in the rear of the car like normal to get the fuel to the engine. But then there is a high pressure pump to get the 2000 atmospheres or something daft for the direct injection of the fuel. It is this second pump that is failing. As yet the E90/91 don't have the smaller capacity direct injection engines so are free of the problem on all but the 335i. There seems to be all sorts of crap and rumours flying about new parts and when and where they are being / will be fitted. Do a little : and you'll get loads of hits. At the moment it still seems like a lottery, so good luck to you all.

BMW techs say mine could be injector Code 29D1 No 5 cyl missfire, BMW have said go ahead and change injector but no injectors to be had. I have took it up with Customer service and they say it is because BMW have changed manufacturer,no date promised , is there potential troubles with our injectors that have made BMW change supplier ?

On the BMW UK site it states that the 320i, 330i and 335i E92's have "High Precision Injection (direct injection system)" but it doesn't state this for the 325i Sorry! Hopefully my machine will be ok

So it's: E90/91 335i E92 320i, 330i, 335i E93 all petrol Interestingly (or not) the E93 does say direct fuel injection on the 325i, but doesn't make any more power like the other engines do.

Remember the 325i E93 is actually a 3.0i engine though (less power etc. than the 330i E93)

Day 5 of car at dealers awaiting injector to see if that cures my missfire, 2 phone calls to customer service, apparently on a priority list. I say how can you say I have priority when engines are still being made with the same injectors and cars sold, mine is bought and paid for so I see it as low priority.

Got call from dealers this morning, injector came into stock this morning and fitted straight away, all is well. Car will be ready to pick up at lunchtime. Picked car up running smooth again no fault light, nice to get back behind the wheel. Only prob is how did BMW get in the situation to have no injectors in stock for a week and lets hope the same fault does not effect the other 5 at some time. Same symptoms as High pressure fuel pump fault but fault codes led to No5 injector.

Slightly off topic, but my E90 was in the bodyshop in around January. It took BMW a week to supply the chrome lip that fits onto the bonnet.
BMW must have a really poor parts operation/logistics system if they can't deliver basic parts quickly. |
