SBC you are fine for age. At MDTC I imagine your tyres will suffer. In addition to your brake pads. I will most likely have my semi slicks on when we do whatever it is using my track rims (which may turn out to be my stockies if they don't sell lol)
I will also be changing to a hard compound brake pad before the event (DIY in the garage most likely) I am sorry if I have confused anyone lol. Let's keep this thread on topic: MDTC March 17th with Luffy - $275 I will create another thread for when I book into a skidpan day. Guran, I'm doing SOTS too, was going to go in April on a weekday sometime, create another thread for that when you have settled on a date. |

oky guys, what do we need to get our cars track ready?..Someone suggested doing a oil change...I have about 2k left on my rear pads, is it fine to track those before I replace them? Wheels I have my stock 16"s which am happy to track on and have quite a bit of tread on them. Anything else we need to know or do?

Love to go, a couple of Questions for those thats been there and have done it b4, I know they are very subjective questions and will depend on driving style, but an approximation or general answer will be good.
i) will our brakes be fried?? i.e will we use up say 30% of our pads and 20% of our rotors, i dont want to pre-maturely end their lives. ii) If say I want to go at a reasonable pace 80-140kms max.... is this still for me? |

I do however use track pads for the day only and then return to the stockers afterwards. The AIM of any training day is to drive within your comfort level, go as fast as your comfortable with.

Thanks for the tips WOPALX. Few more novice questions. Are track pads cheaper than normal pads and what are their advantages or is it just ok to let the stock pads wear out if they cost the same? Any suggested brands? Do you replace the pads by yourself or at a shop? (or maybe I could just go easy and get Steve to do this) Also do you use run flats or non run flats as your prefered tyres and if for example I changed wheels from road 19"s to track 16"s for a track day would the wheels require rebalancing everytime I change them over?

Track pads cost wise I would think are going to be more expensive. They bite harder when warm and dissipate heat faster so are better for track use. That said they squeal like a motherf**ker hence why I only use them for track days.
I don't do my own brakes so will most likely get Steve to do them for me. Cost wise I guess with the cost of installing them and then taking them off if your not hell bent on hot lapping your car then the stokers should be okay. I just use my street tires, if I was tracking more often I'd buy a second set of wheels and tires. FYI for a novice I'd suggest just doing an oil change. Track pads, track tires etc while nice to have are probably overkill since your there to learn in a safe environment. Quote:

I'm going with my 'spare' set of wheels/tyres just because I have them available to me, plus the handling on the 17s will be slightly better.
Brakes wise, you don't need to change pads and yes tracking will wear them down - but street pads after a few repeated hard stops are going to start feeling rather soft and mushy. I'm going to change pads to 'track pads' just because I don't think the cost is that much more, particularly when you consider you are prolonging the life of your street pads AND they will work a lot better in the track environment. No need to worry about 'rebalancing' wheels. It's good to do, but not necessary. |

Thanks WOPALX, bmroxm5, also out of curiosity, do we use DS mode on the track or the manual steptronic mode?

Last track day I did at Wakefield was damp, drying, did 6 sessions. The brake wear indicator went down 5000km at the front and 3000km at the rear. If this is vaguely accurate, then I suppose that's 5-10% of the pad life per track day.
OEM pads seem to cope fine at Wakefield and Marulan and I wouldn't overly stress about changing pads if you are there for fun as opposed to maximum lap times/learning - maybe EC would be more demanding.

Oh, and manual mode is occasionally disobedient, changing up too early and not changing down when you ask. Spotting the gear indicator is strangely difficult when looking intently at the road.
The Sport auto mode actually does 95% of what you need, I'm afraid to say, holding to redline and changing down aggressively once it realises you are on a track. Finally, can't commit to MTDC in March at present.

It's because 90% of the "Melbournians" drive Holdens.
