Does this make sence?
Hey guys, decided to go get the spark plugs replaced (91xxx miles)
Got a set of NGK 1208 from O'rielly for an awesome price of $8.49 each! Anyways, the Mechanic starts working on her, and one of plugs was filled with oil. Told me that I have to replace the "valve cover gasket" for $350 first because otherwise I would have to replace the plugs again.. Question; is he right about the valve cover gasket?

Yes, generally the valvecover gasket is the cause of oil in the spark plug holes. For $350 I would go for it. That seems like a very good price.

Just wondering, but what are some signs to look out for to know when to replace the valve cover gasket? is this a pretty straight forward DIY?

The gasket is cheap (40 bucks)..it's the labor that makes this job more expensive. You have to take off a bit to get access to the valve cover. It is more of a complex diy I would say, but is doable.

So I've been searching online for the gasket, looks like ECS has a few different ones. Which one do I need?

my 2 cents if someone will do it for you for $350, I'd let them (assuming they are competent).
I considered a DIY on this. Another forum member nearly pleaded with me to reconsider, said he was pretty experienced but still managed to mess it up. Apparently it's easy to break the crankcase breather hose and add more time and cost to your effort in the process. There are people who've done it so I know it's not impossible, but I've read you can spend an entire day on it if things go well. I just think I'd hand it off for $350. |

Are you sure even your mechanical knows what he is getting himself into? Everyone is seems so impressed with his price, assuming it is as difficult as everyone is making out to be I would be hesitant your mechanic even knows what actually needs to be done?!?

I did valve cover gaskets a few months ago with spark plugs for fun at 90k. There's a couple good guides on here, and check realoem for the part number or just call ecs. My buddy and I did it in about 5 hours, and I'm not going to lie it was scary at first but looking back it was really no big deal. Plus my buddy just drank my beer the whole time and didn't do much. Just take it slow, make sure you take the time to get everything out of the way, have your external torx sockets handy and go fo it.
Only issue I had was I dripped a little oil on the exhaust manifold, so there was some smoke when I fired it up but I sat there with a fire extinguisher for 5 minutes until it burned off, so get a rag on the manifold before you start. |
