Well I just got my other AW 335i about 10 days ago. Very low mile and driven by a mature female adult, never raced .This car looked flawless when I bought it and the paint looked amazing not one dent or scratch. Now after 3 washes and snow I am seeing the car has a new door scuff everyday. Id say 5, no dents though. Also what appears to be a 2 inch key mark. i am very upset. After doing research used car dealers use products to make cars look flawless and after a few washes it does back to the true colors, its very annoying! I also took it to a local detail-er with 25 year exp. He said it doesn't look like they did any touch up or buffing because it doesn't have an "X" on the head lights which indicate the dealer had the car touched up or buffed. Which is also very annoying how they just used some filling products and sold me the car. I want this fixed what can I do,should I call and ask them to fix it complain say I will take the car back ? please help.Overall The car looks great, but I am a perfectionist and you couldnt tell unless washing your personal car but I want a very clean car. Ps I also bought my own touch up paint so id they do have to fill anything I can provide them with real AW bmw paint.

I think you have two hopes of them paying for it. Bob hope and no hope. As mentioned above go to good detailer. As a dealer who has supplied a second hand car their obligation is if there is something mechanically wrong for a reasonable period which is normally 6 months.

Your job as a buyer is to spot any marks and use it in negotiations. If you want a spotless perfect car then buy new.

My friend trades cars as an independent dealer and specialised in 3-5 year old bmw's and such like. Once he had a customer who complained about a stone chip on a car. His response is its a 5 year old car with 60k. The car was immaculate. He then offered significantly under asking and my friend politely suggested he go down the road to a main dealer and buy a new car. The potential buyer then refined his offer and my friend refused to sell to him. He sold the car the following day to a buyer with reasonable expectations. The original person called him back a couple of times wanting to buy the car.

I guess the moral of the story is set expectations that are reasonable. A second hand car won't be mark free. But any dealer or seller for that matter will try and present the car in the best light possible.

You could ask... Whether or not they'll help is another story. It is common practice for dealers to just compound and glaze cars. Browse auotpoia and autogeek forums to find a reputable detailer in your area. I wouldn't trust someone solely based on his claim of "25 years experience". I've seen a lot of hack jobs from guys like those. Auto detailing is one of the most common ways people get screwed due to lack of knowledge of the procedure.

Expect to pay around $400-600 for a great job. Familiarize yourself with detailing terminology and such from the forums I suggested if you plan on going with a detailer not popularly recommended by the detailing community. And remember, proper detailing takes many hours to complete (one man could easily take over 8 hours), so if the price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

if someone will skill buffs a car the only way to tell that the car was buffed is the shine and crystal clear clearcoat. If its a 5yr old car, yes it will have a deeper scuff, chips, etc etc.

but there should not be swirls, or light, faint scratches. The only things the dealer could do to make it look good & hide stuff in the paint would be sealent & wax.

Both will fill micro scracthes, swirls, etc etc. once they begin to degrade and slowly wear away is when you will see all the imperfections that they were hiding.


I detail at a high end shop, you would be shocked how many 100k cars we do that look like total sh!t. after a light polish, clay, wax + seal all of that is gone.

Same thing happened to me when i bought a CPO from the dealership. They offered me a detail and gave me a loaner. The detail made more nicks appear though, guess they buffed out the touched up areas!!! SA apologized and told me it was a pretty common practice by the sales people.

Get it detailed and cover the whole car in PPF to save it from stone chips, scratches etc

I seriously doubt you will get anything from the used car dealer. It is possible but highly unlikely. They got your money already!!!!!

Paint Corrections is a long process and most volume shops would not do this kind of work since it is not in their business model. They are looking to turn as many cars as they can in a day.

A good way to spot a pro is to see if they have a paint gauge. A pro will always measure the paint prior to any corrections. They want to make sure the car has enough clear afterwards. Most cars only have about 100-200 microns or 4-5 mils worth of paint on the metal (Primer+BaseCoat+ClearCoat). OEM paint is thin.

Your post can't be serious? You bought the car and expect after the car washes its their fault for detailing it so nice. It could have been the car wash itself. You remind me of a guy who I refused to sell my E34 M4 to. He loved the car and it was in mint condition. The free on was gone but I barely drove the thing. He said it would cost him 5k to get it fixed. He low balled me 5k less than asking and I told him have a good day. He kept saying I want the car and I go what do you expect from a 1991. A week later someone paid my asking and it was a used dealer.

I am not a rude person but why in the heck would I abuse a car I just paid that much of my hard earned money working for. My other car was in GMtech magazine for being a flawless 7 year old 700+ hp car and having on of the best ratings on car domain. I really dont think I would make a single scratch on my car. My friend lent me her ysi z06 for a month while she was over seas in Palestine not a single scuff.

The dealer probably used a glaze which fills swirls and scratches temporarily. Its like compounding and polishing without the work and will go away very fast.

I think what some of us are trying to say is that your expectations of buying a second hand car may be a little high and thus why you are a little disappointed. A photo would help as one persons view of damaged scratched paint and another may differ.

Be that as it may

A good detail should sort the car out. This is something you can learn to do or get in a pro. When I do my car I do the following.
Snow foam
Carefully two bucket clean
Clay
Polishing compound with rotory polisher gradually getting finer so that no halo can be seen.
Hand wax preperation
2 coats of wax.

Wheel clean
Hand polish
Wheel wax

Interior Hoover
Wipe plastics
Leather cleaner
Leather conditioner
Window clean etc

Takes me about 2 days to do a good job on a new to me car. One day to do the outside assuming car is clean

Where are you based. I know a good detailer in middle England and another down in Hampshire.

I have a rather long scratch on my hood that magically appeared after I lightly washed my recently purchased 2010 328xi. I'd love to know how the dealer hid it while the car was on the lot. Sigh.

I took the car to a carwash myself before i bought it.

Its easy to tell if theres a glaze on it.

To OP, you really expect a used car to be in immaculate condition? Keep dreaming.

Seems to me you have two choices:

1. Go back to the used car place, show them the car, and see if they'll toss you a couple hundred to go away. Probably unlikely. Best they are going to do, if anything is offer to have "their guy" detail it which would be a huge mistake imo.

2. Find a good detailer, have it corrected and cut your losses. Just consider the cost part of the cost of a used car, chalk it up to experience and move on. A good detailer can transform the car the right way.
