If you were closer I'd come by and test the LPFP for you and see if running it would maybe unplug the fuel lines and filter. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the issue. If you can keep it in a heated place for awhile, that should help.

I'm having the exact same issue as k20power. I started the car, drove it 1/2 a block, pulled over to check my parking next to a curb while it was still running and the car just suddenly stopped, like someone pressed the stop button. I tried starting it, but it would just crank and no start. Exactly like k20power's video. Car seemed to be running just fine before it died.
I did have a code P0471 which I cleared (it has shown up before but caused no issues) Any ideas? EDIT: Added info from the Carly app dignostics: 0. Just did another test.
At the fuel pump I get ~10 volts at the first plug when attempting to start. However when having a friend try to start the car I put my ear to the pump and heard nothing. Seems the relay is ok but the pump may be bad? What is odd is I hear people talk about long starts, my car only tries to start for like 3 seconds then gives up. Battery seems good, even tried jumping it to be sure. It cranks no problem, just never starts. |

Did another test, thought maybe my lift pump was faulty. I unplugged a sensor on the fuel line near the engine (fuel temp sensor maybe?) and cranked it, fuel came shooting out so lift pump seems ok.
I'm at a loss now.. Not sure what the problem is. Wish k20power came back with whatever his solution was since my symptoms are exactly the same as his video. |

Is there a way to diagnose the sensor?
Searching I don't see this sensor ever failing on the D's; only the gas E90's. I'm at 83,000 miles currently if that helps any.. Last edited by B16; 01-18-2018 at 03:05 PM.. |

At the time i had a p3cars vent sensor which would show 'pending' codes on each start. When I fired the car back after it was returned on a flatbed; I got a pending code for "3E90 - crankshaft RPM - no signal " I never had problems after that but if you google that problem (not even bmw specific), the symptom is the engine wont start. |

Was yours also a "short crank" like the video on the last page? I hear people complain of long cranks and not start, mine is short like just 3 seconds then gives up. It is very consistent in never starting. |

Was yours a D? I hate to just start throwing parts at it.. I can't find a way to test it. Thank you for chiming in, I really appreciate it. |

I would periodically check if it starts. But try and find that sensor and check connections. |

not sure if you've checked this already ( i am outta time today to read whole thread) but I had a issue priming my fuel after a filter change, and it took around an hour to get it going again.
What I had to do was apply 12volts to the lift pump and crank for a good 5minutes. ( I gave breaks to the starter of about 30seconds after 10 sec of cranking) I also had a battery charger hooked up to the car. Anyway, my 2 cents |

Thank you. Filter has never been changed. Car wont let me crank for more than a few seconds at a time, even hooked up to jumper cables and holding the start button.
Where the heck is the crank pos sensor on the D? lol |

It looks to be at the very rear of the engine, #8. https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...l-unit/OoOHTKo Looks like 1 bolt? But hard to get to... |

i'm not convinced your problem is the HPFP though. Good luck |

It could be the Fuel Pressure Regulator on the rear of the CP3. Those fail more often than the actual pump.
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=13_0958 The problem is that you have to remove the CP3 to access the FPR so you might as well replace the whole pump instead of a single part. |

Engine will run fine with these faults for some time, and I can't think of any reason they could be related to your seeming fuel issue. Last edited by AlpineX; 01-25-2018 at 05:11 PM.. |
