Noticed in the BMW Warranty:
6. This BMW Insured Warranty will not cover:
an insured vehicle that has been subject to alterations, has had experimental equipment fitted or has in any way been modified from BMW’s approved specification

This might make the Birds warranty interesting if you've had any mods done - be interested to see what they cover and how they address the "not local to Birds" issue

i had an email tennis match with Kevin today, and the bottom line was that he didn't feel his warranty would match up to the BMW comprehensive warranty.. and as such refused to offer it to me

He seemed to suggest that there still some niggles in their offering that needed ironing out but there would be something along soon-ish, hopefully within a few months.

Kevin was quite eager to offer something that would cut out the crooked warranty middlemen in the event of needing a claim (as BMW insured warranty does very well) but not tie you to the BMW dealerships for servicing.. as a repairer apparently they have lots of issues with 3rd party warranties.

so, watch this space i guess!

for me as i don't have a service due until 02/2012 (woot!) i'm going to with the BMW one and keep an eye on what Birds are up to in the meantime

I've had the comprehensive BMW insured warranty and it's been painless to claim through and paid itself back very quickly.

The BMW extended warranty looks good value. Landrover want £660 for a 4yr old Freelander 2.

FWIW I wish I had gone zero excess with mine! Even with all the shenanigans and the dealer taking the hit on the excess a couple of times and BMW UK agreeing some yet-to-fail parts could be included in the work, I've still spent £300 on the various excesses this year related to coil failures/injection replacent, and the (auto) gearbox is now leaking and needing a cover changed so that's another £100 in a couple of weeks!

In practice all car dealers I have used tend to have very limited bandwidth to do unexpected jobs when the car is with them so anything new that is found tends to be a separate visit and excess.

My dealer tends to lump work together if possible... Depends on how much the individual dealer wants to take on hassle in order to help out the customer.

I've got £100 excess. Used the warranty 3 times last year but only paid the excess once (As they were for related issues).

Good times.

I can see your point though for definite.

Realistically you are gambling on using the warranty less than twice when you choose the £100 excess option.

bmw warranty is a fantastic deal, and the no excess just gives you that extra "oh, i'll just pop down the dealer to see if they can sort this out" comfort..

in previous cars i have always put off and put off and put off getting niggly things sorted out due to labour charges

Just renewed mine with £250 excess, Named Component and EA. The low/zero excess options would of course be nice but my reasoning was a) my mileage is so low at the moment (taking the train to work now) and b) I'm generally happy to do smaller 'niggle' type jobs myself, I just want a bit of insurance against big-ticket disasters like turbos, hpfp etc.

Went with the £29/month option rather than lock in for a year, on the basis that I could change the terms if my situation changes (i.e. if I start commuting by car again). Seems a pretty good deal all in all.
