300k is certainly above average for a 3 series, that number was 140k back in 2005. But it's not above average for a 7 series (nobody spends 1/3 their income on a car, under normal circumstances).

We went to a party last weekend, and I met this well known doctor, introduced myself, addressed him as "Dr. XXXXXXX." He puts his left hand over my hand as he's shaking it (um which makes me a little uncomfortable to begin with ), and he says, "Call me Michael."

After the party I saw him get into a E550, to you and me, that's nothing, not even sporty. The guy works for a public co. and I saw his compensation was 14 mil. (salary was over 4). Maybe you should pitch this guy on your oil change franchise scenario

I just don't like someone generalizing and saying "oh its that kid whose parents give him everything and he doesn't know the value of a dollar." I truly do feel that I earned everything that I've been given by exceeding my parents' expectations. And my parents may have money, but it's always been my goal to exceed what they have made both monetarily and personally, ultimately without their help.
no one is saying that about you. half the people on here had their parents buy their first cars

i'm just saying you're not exactly coming off as humble when you throw in the rolex and the thirteenth school in the country...

many people on here have nice expensive things and went to even better schools than you... we don't go around telling people about it in every post

I was very fortunate to be able to drive a 335xi. Basically the story goes I had a 2001 330ci and there were endless problems with it so we traded it in along with my moms car (09 tiguan) so she could get a highlander. That left us with three (a more realistic number of cars rather than four which we had for a couple months) cars my moms highlander, my dads '07 335xi, and his 2001 330xi that has his companies logo on the side. So basically for the time being, I have no idea how long, I get to drive his amazing 335xi and he drives the one with the logo on it because he does quotes and such with his company. Unlike some of the kids on her the car is not mine, but I get to drive it everyday and I am so thankful.

I run into this all the time living in an area that is mostly retirees. My reply is usually:

No kids
No wife
I live a very simple lifestyle (i.e. I don't have cable b/c I don't watch TV)
Bought a wrecked 328i that we repaired ourselves.
Traded it and I got my 2011 335i.

My parents came here with literially nothing (refugees from Vietnam) and made a decent living, so this is nothing compared to what they did.

Also going back to school soon to become a teacher =)

My parents would rather me get unpaid internships than waste time working somewhere where I will never get anywhere, even if I am making a couple of bucks... there just isn't as much time do have a full time, low-paying job and do well at an amazing higher educational institute.

I was asked to explain myself when I first joined, and I seemed to have won over most of the older populous of e90post, so I'm not going to explain myself again. Some are lucky, some aren't as lucky... my parents didn't have to give me anything, but they felt proud (and they have damn high standards for me).

An a**hole is going to be an a**hole whether he has a 10 year old civic or a brand new BMW. Money may be a factor, but its not the car you drive that makes you what you are, it's how you were raised...

Gotta suck having to pay back those law school student loans, so you finished college at 18 or 19?

Your parents are probably great people and obviously extremely successful. You sound like a responsible guy and I think you're right that the issue isn't about you having a fast car and getting in trouble with safety.

It just shocks me that parents would buy their kid a 60k car and a 10k watch(minimum) before even starting college, regardless even if they're billionaires. I just find that it'd be hard to teach someone true modesty vs. someone is smart enough to act modest to not come off as a pretentious A-hole.

No I only did about 6 months and then dropped out, it wasn't for me. I've taken a break from school, and ill go back and major in childhood development pretty soon.

Your point does make sense. The sad truth is that where I grew up, most of my friends had about just as much or much more than I do (and flaunted it - I actually LOVE driving and think of it as a hobby even - I feel like I can get the true potential out of my car - most of my friends just have nice cars to show off and they end up crashing them...).
Even at Hopkins I see students (granted not the majority in the least) driving BMWs/Mercedes and wearing luxury timepieces.

I think its easier to afford your car if your a young person in Canada. I got a 2007 E90 328i in 2009 when I was 19 years old. Then I switched to a E92 335i after I graduated last May.

For me, it was because:
1 - university tuition was cheap (less than $6k per year, its like 15k+ in the US right?)
2 - I lived at home, free rent and food
3 - At 19, I started working for the federal government, which pays great even for entry level jobs (in Canada at least)
4 - My insurance is dirty cheap because my dad is listed as the primary driver and myself as the secondary driver, even though it is my car and my dad has his own E90 (my mom is listed as the primary driver for that car lol)
