No you can't, the split is hidden by the bodywork. You'll know if its split by filling the tank full with fuel and it will leak onto the floor if its got a leak.

Not dealt with the service department, I only deal with the parts guy and they are really helpful apart from one of the guys who is an epically miserable old git.

I did have a ramp but its still difficult to get enough visibilty of the stub without breaking it. Even though I was expecting it. 15mm copper does the job with some bonding agent.

My mate did mine yesterday and it took him 3.5 hours as its awkward to get to as you have to drop the fuel tank at one side.
Tip is to make sure you have very little fuel in to save the waste and lighten the load. My last 3 m sports have all had this problem.

Interesting thread, my last big BMW bill was on an E30 about 20 years ago for a fuel breather pipe leak. Now many years later I have an E91 so I have my fingers crossed it doesn't happen again!

Perhaps a daft question, but how much leaking fuel are we talking about? Is it enough that it warrants spending £200 on a fix, or is an alternative to not brim the car?

It can be quite a bit of fuel and not brimming it wont stop the leak. Anywhere it isnt on a level surface or anytime it goes round a bend. The moral question is it fair to spray fuel over the road? As a motorcyclist nursing injuries from a streak of diesel I thought it best I fixed mine.

Ade - Fair point. When I'm on my bike, I've been wondering who leaves trails of diesel on corners!
Sorry to hear about your injuries. Will have to check the E91 when I get home. |

Is this a fault which is 'common' to pre-lci's only as I have not come across any threads which mention the issue on lci's? It seems like the hose was covered with a plastic pipe in lci's which appears to have sorted the problem.

Check out this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...=414556&page=2
There is an image from BMW ETK which suggests that they used a different part from July 06 onwards, which could explain why the LCI cars don't appear to have the problem. My car is pre-LCI but build date shows as 22/08/06, so i'm hoping it's fitted with the later part. When i swap to my winter wheels i will whip the inner arch off and have a look. Here's the image from the other thread, with part numbers:

So the easiest way to find out if you have this problem is to fill it up, park it up and then wait and see if you have a small puddle of fuel by the rear offside wheel? Is that right?

MPD78 You are correct, mine actually deformed the side moulding slightly. A dead give away now I know what to look for. Just in front of rear offside wheel. It will be impossible to see the pipe damage from any angle.

Right, mines got the leak!!! I've read some other threads on this subject with people talking about goodwill gestures from BMW and the stealers while others get charged £700 or more to get the pipe replaced
I've had my car a few months, it's my first bimmer and I've never used a stealers so I've probably got no chance when it comes to goodwill, although my car does have full BMWSH. Has anyone had the pipe replaced at or could recommend a decent indie in the East London/Essex area please? |

Maybe a stupid question, but isn't it possible to cut a hole under the rear seat? The vent pipe is located on the right side of the fuel tank. Maybe you can reach this from the inside of the car through a 40mm hole left of the fuelpump?
