Spoke with BMW TECH. This valve is NOT to reduce noise, its there to heat up the cat.

Disconnecting electrical connection MIGHT void your emission warranty !

I think any long-term 335 owner should do it - if just for aesthetics. Consider that after 2-3+ years of owning the car, your right exhaust will be black with soot, and your left one will be shiny silver!

Watch an older 335 the next time you see it. Almost guaranteed to be like that.

Yes. It creates a backpressure of hot gases, which heat up the cat much quicker.

Cats only work when they are hot.

The whole reduction of noise thing is just a myth.

How is it a myth when it clearly reduces the noise vs. having the actuator unplugged?

And so what if it just heats the cats up faster, does not have any affect whatsoever on the driveability of the car.

Its a myth that people think and think they know that Valve is there to reduce noise. <<<< this is what i meant to say

Yes. It does reduce noise, and so do cats......and they both dont effect drivability if removed, but they both are there to reduce emissions.

obviously its minor.......but a dealer has every right to void emission warranty on a car if disconnect this valve........just like if you remove the cat.

Sound is much better at start-up on my 335! Everything else seems a tweak louder. Love it!

Voiding warranty because its taking a few seconds longer to heat-up cats? Its more about emissions gas levels on start-up then anything else. I have noticed that on my 328 (that has no valve) got upgraded software last time in for service and now it revs 1-2K faster for the first 30 seconds on start-up/drive. Tell me that is more better for the environment then on a cold engine....definitely not better for the engine given cats are downstream!

In the end: everyone at their own risk. But thanks for the mod. Love it!

** Warning ** this does cause fault codes to show up. Tested on multiple cars and triggered a fault code on all of them. Just clear it before you go in for service.

This was a super easy mod. I had it now for appx. 6 months and there have been no issues and it does not throw any faults. The car just sounds bettter because now you can actually hear the fantastic sound of BMW inline-6. This is how it should have come from the factory. People should have an option of a bit sporty exhaust when their car comes with a sport package..........are you listening BMW


Those that do not want to hear the marvelous inline-6 singing probably would not even care for the harsher ride or greater effort steering feel that comes with the sports package.

Tried this about a week ago and everything was fine, super easy to do, nice sound, etc. When cold starting this morning however I did notice the throatiness a bit more accentuated, unusual unsteadiness and all of a sudden and still within seconds, the car begins to sound like it wanted to stall, and I get this big error message in the screen saying engine loosing power or something to that effect. It had the big exclamation mark and the engine icon. Turned off the car, reconnected the valve, and then turned car on. Sounded back to original and the error message no longer there. Drove off to work with no other issues.
Confused now, I've read many of the postings here and no one has seemed to have this particular issue.

What about an after market exhaust? My warranty is still good right?

This mod can't be hurting anything. An aftermarket exhaust won't have the actuator anyway, so it'd have the same effect if the actuator were disconnected. I don't see people preaching not to get aftermarket exhausts.

Like everyone else said here before, the only thing to worry about are the codes triggered. Aside from that, it's not hurting the car.

That being said, I probably won't do it because of the codes. I'd rather get an exhaust or do the golf tee mod.

I solved my warning message problem. It had nothing to do with the HPFP or with any codes. It was the entire injectors rack which was jacked!! Yup, '08 335i with 21k miles, bought a month ago and BMW certified. Spent 3 days at the dealer and they had no idea what the problem was at first, so they had to email back and forth the BMW Injectors GURU somewhere in the East coast who directed the entire operation remotely, and at the end, his diagnosis was, replace entire injector rack and reset computers. After that, problem entirely gone!!
I know because I got a hold of the service sheet and all this together with error message codes, etc was in there.
Nowhere did it say that they picked up any other funky codes in addition to the injectors issue.
So, in my case I think it was just bad luck and that the mod had very likely nothing to do with the injectors going bad. It was really cool while I had it and all, but just in case, I am not unplugging that connector again. It just gives me a bad feeling now...
