This whole subject is a worry, so I thought i would have a look today.

It's dead easy to get in and unscrew the OBD socket and tuck it up out the way, which I suppose would be some deterrent if they were in a real hurry. It's not rocket science to trace it back though.

I don't fancy cutting any wires.

Does anyone know where you could get a dummy socket to screw in its place, I had a quick look on eBay and nothing jumped out at me.

OK Here is a review of the OBD port fix provided by the independent garage given by Mart1000 earlier in this thread an which I have now had fitted to my car. You can look earlier in the thread for the garage and I'm not going to describe exactly what they did since the same riff-raff stealing BMWs may also be reading this thread.

Cost: £90

What did they do: Disable the OBD port but provide a means to re-enable it.

How long: Took about 1 hour

When can they do it: Only Monday-Friday

How secure: Reasonable; anyone attempting to steal the car by hacking a key/OBD port would have to spend some time working out what is going on

Any affect on car: None that I can see, but the definitive answer will be when it goes back to BMW dealer for the next service and BMW try to re-enable the OBD port to read it. The independent garage did say they disabled the port for the theft fix, then re-enabled it and were able to read from it, but I did not visually verify this myself so I'll have to take their word for it.

Visual asthetics: Looks the same as before.

Im thinking of finding a decent auto electrician who knows what he is doing to move the OBD to somewhere else then put a dummy port back in the original place.

A thief will try the dummy port but have no luck then hopefully give up lol

"Krooklok or similar is cheaper and highly visible. Put them off breaking your window first and move-on to someone else's unprotected car"

True, but he doesnt know if BMW can re-enable it yet lol

Is it something that can be repeatedly enabled / disabled?

Yes. And once he actually tells BMW how to enable it then it won't be an issue.

The indie garage also said BMW may not use the OBD port at all: they can download the data wirelessly.

Yes they do but the wireless dongle plugs into the OBD.

Well that's something... it occurred to me that if you can read diagnostics wirelessly then there's other things you can do wirelessly......

Let's hope Airbus/Boeing never link their aircraft to the internet even for in flight entertainment. Who knows what would screw up then.

You can already get Internet on in-flight entertainment.

I think the best deterrent would be a steering wheel lock, for manual car owners you cant beat the handbrake/gear lever lock which is oldskool but works.

As mentioned it would be good if they give up even before trying, another garage told me to swap over the pos and neg on can bus port to cook their equipment when they plugin, dont know if it would work.

My mate woke up to find all his windows were wound down and lock tampered with, he reckons they used tools to keep lock on door turned which winds windows down.

They didnt take car for some reason and i think sat nav and leather is a turn on for the thieving mofo's

Another idea:

Swap a few pins around in your port socket, Swap over CAN High and Low (pins 6 & 15) would be a good start, or move them to another spare position. (anywhere you like).

Then make a short extension lead (male to female) and wire that in such a way as to swap back the pin allocation. This means your car can only be connected to with your special lead put in before the reader.

About £10 for the bits?

Or for a quick fix, just remove pin 6 or 15 and tuck it back in the loom out of site, no one can talk to the car via CAN protocol and do any harm. Or like I said earlier cut that colour coded wire further back and put in a hidden switch to make or break it.
These little devices are able to work out which wire is which (as the OBD pin config changes from year to year/model to model), and then work according. Any swapping of the wires is just a waste of time.
CANBus relies on EITHER of the 2 communication wires, knocking one of them out will also do nothing for security.

BMW fixed the issue back in 2010, then another way in was found which has since been addressed in v45 and onward firmware. How long it will take the scummers to hack back in is open to question.

The chances of BMW doing a recall are very slim. A software update takes most of the day to complete and costs up to £200. BMW don't like flashing the firmware if they can help it because of the risk in frying the Cas unit.

If you are still under warranty and you have a problem with your bluetooth not working properly for example. The whole car will get a firmware update under warranty. This would include the Cas module.
The issue was never fixed, it's due to the lack of encryption between each node (module). BMW implemented a encryption method in the new F cars, which has since been hacked (as the unlock protocol must be available to all dealers etc etc).

Updating will depend on how many modules need updating, but will be a maximum of a full work day on OBD, much less if the MOST ring is used as a gateway.

The CAS is at no risk of being fried with an update. None at all.

The CANBus system is also very sensitive to any wire changes or breaks. Once the wire is broken and soldered, you're going to have endless problems as the solder itself changes the resistance of the part of the wire.
Anything do to with switches, or soldering CANBus wires is going to be bad news.

Seems hiding the port is the best way I wonder would getting a OBD2 port plug and a socket and extending the port so it comes outsomewhere else would affect its operation .

or something like this

I intend to reconfigure the pinout on the obd2 port to something rather random. I am making up a cable with a plug and socket that will mirror this config. Sort of like the obd equivalent of a locking wheelnut.

That's what I was thinking, relocating it somewhere out of the way.

However, as per Simons post, it doesn't sound like the wires like lengthening by means of soldering in lengths of cable.
