N55 Engine Cover Removal? (2011 335i Sedan)
Calling all BMW techs,
Went to replace my spark plugs and I tried to search the forums, but all the DIY's are for N54... I could NOT figure out how to remove the rear engine cover in this picture (see red outline)? It seems to get caught on something in the back. Has anyone done this already and can let me know what the trick is? Thanks, Sam |

it comes off, start at the front and work your way back. the tough part is obviously in the back with the wire bundles and the strut brace, but you just need to work it out. Mine's been off now for at least a year...

you know wut? slops is right... I did loosen the 2 strut braces at the tower. I just took a torx bit and removed those 2 bolts (1 on each side) and that did the trick. It's still a PITA which is why I keep mine off. Easy to change spark plugs and on the dyno, I can easily hit my coil wires

Here's Part 1 of the video. Takes you all the way through removing the first spark plug... Comments appreciated. Some advice before you start:
1.) PLEASE USE METRIC TOOLS! This is a european car and guess what measuring system their engineers use? I see all these other DIY's saying to use SAE or English size sockets and such... It MIGHT work, but you run a big risk of rounding off the nuts/bolts! If you do that, you will need special tools to extract. 2.) Be patient and take your time (2-3 hours). Its tempting to do things right before a run or such, but trying to do a repair under time pressure is not ideal. You run a big risk of doing something wrong and then having to redo it. 3.) Try to do this on a level surface as you are removing a strut brace. And for your own safety should parking brake fail, etc... And here is Part 2. Takes you all the way through starting the engine back up! Last edited by actionj_99; 04-10-2013 at 10:57 AM.. Reason: Added link to Part 2 |

Nice video...BMW made that a chore. Oil change, easy...spark plug change, PITA. Ha.
