Do people miss the E46 windows winding down slightly when the door is opened?
I have lost count of the number of times I have told passengers to slam the door hard - they close them gingerly because they don't want to harm my car, but the damn thing is so airtight.
On the E46 (and the E36 too?? Anybody?) the windows used to roll down a fraction when the door was opened, then wind up again when it was closed. This made closing the doors easier, and also BMW claimed it improved the stiffness of the body (don't know how but that is what BMW were claiming). Do people miss this feature, or was it just a gimmick?

That is correct only the coupes do that, the sedans never have. So there is nothing to miss

Hmmm, this is interesting. A friend's E46 318is 4 door does it. Perhaps it was programmed that way by mistake?

Perhaps it is a 318i Sports then. You know the one with the better looking front.
In any case this particular example does do it, I have been in the car numerous times and always notice the feature. It definitely has 4 doors. Perhaps it is a programming error for this one car. But I am not crazy, just sleep deprived atm. I only mentioned it because of this car, and the memory of Wheels Magazine making a big deal about it when the BMWs first came out with this feature.

I agree with the door slamming issue, especially with the rear doors on mine since they are used less and takes longer to break in. Happens to me in fact a lot.

My E46 325Ci did that and I found it to be a pain for several reasons. Firstly, some of my passengers had a horrible habit (no matter how many times I told them not to) of using the top of the door to help themselves into/out of the car. But with no metal frame, they were applying pressure right on the glass.
Secondly, I had issues during the winter from time to time where the window wouldn't drop all the way due to ice and whatnot, and on more than one occasion, when I closed the door, the window was resting on the outside of the car rather than sliding into its little housing. I would have to open the door, lower the window, close the door, and then close the window to get it to fit. So in short, I certainly do not miss that feature.

My E46 doesn't. Though even after just over 2 years I often have to have two or three goes at closing the door because the seal is so good.
BMW Mini's do drop the windows, but then they are of a frameless door type. Barring frozen windows it makes sense and avoids undue pressure on the glass if you slam the door. I wonder how much more time they have to spend ensuring that the fit and setup of the windows are right to avoid sealing problems, or do they just put a fudge factor into the price for the resulting warranty work?

I loved that feature on my e36 coupe and now on my e46. I hope they keep it for the e90 and don't see why they wouldn't. I never had a problem with people slamming the doors or grabbing on to the glass.

Two door BMW cars without window frames sold since 1992 in the United States have this feature however, it is not to make it easier to close the door. It is to make it easier for the glass to seat on the window seal.
