Your own drive

Really it's a 15 minute job with a Phillips screwdriver, and maybe a torch.

There is a way around it. Advance coding/ updating, where you can only update what you want to....
Of course, there's always an 'advanced' option, but 99.9% of the time your car will get plugged in by the BMW tech and he'll hit the 'update' button, then go and start on another job....

Just spoke to my local indy, he was talking about the fix which apparently simply removes the 7 "keys" that BMW sell the car with.

Thanks.
They do, which leads me to wonder whether they actually carried out the fix?

Mine's booked in for Tuesday for this fix but apparently some dealers are having problems implementing the update.... we'll have to wait and see!

This might be of interest - confirmation that the security update is basically just stopping the windows from dropping.

Thanks for posting.

Interesting to read and following is my understanding,
1- They are de-activating the window drop by the key in the door lock but retaining the window drop by remote.
2- They are carrying it out on CAS and no other modules should be altered (good for those who have 'Engine enhancements maps').
3- Pre 2007 cars are not affected is a bull shit.

Thanks for posting the details.

Looks like I'll carry on and fit that dummy OBD port then.

P2 of it states
Claims will be processed and settled subject to current warranty terms.

If you car is older than 01/03/07 and under extended warranty, push your dealer to upgrade CAS of your car.

(Though there is no point of this, as they can smash the window and take your car if OBD is not hidden. )

Labour: 10 FRUs (for software update only).

Does anybody know if 1 FRU = 15 minutes.

And if your car is there for servicing / repair than 8 FRUs.

Interesting!!!

I'm seem to recall something on Pistonheads that said that in BMW speak there were 12 Flat Rate Units in an hour.

I.e. 1 FRU = 5 minutes.

I could be wrong though.

Pre March 2007 built cars do not utilise the Canbus protocol. You can tell this by checking your OBD port. If you do not have pins in 6 & 14 then you are running the older k-line protocol. BMW switched to canbus mar '07.

Whether this protocol suffers the same issue with key coding is a question I would like answered .. but the fix required would mean a completely new software patch tailored to an obsolete protocol and as its older than 6 years BMW deem it not worth the effort as it only covers 18 months worth of production. Whereas the post mar 07 canbus ones cover 6 years worth of production.

So this does not include a full software update then, just a related element?

Love this idea!

Did you just order a left hand door handle and fit it over the top of the lock?
Or did you actually remove the lock?

Here's hoping your fob never runs out of juice when the other fob is not around.

Reading those 3 pages really does disappoint. How did it take them 8 WEEKS to cook up a fix that only disables the window role down??
I am not sure I can even be bothered... (if my insurance contact me I suppose ill have to)
Hidden ODB port, with fake in its place = win.

They are picking the car up and delivering it back when it's done (a 38 mile round trip)

Mike
that will get a good thrashing then!

If you read this thread and some other threads carefully, you will find out that it does not matter if your car is Canbus or K-Line protocol. Keys can be clonned on K-Line cars as well.

I don't doubt you, I was merely speculating as to why they are not bothering with a patch for pre March 07 cars and the reason why Mar 07 is the date of choice

Disappointing news.
More reason to get one of those securemycar alarm jobs, or have the port physically disabled. After more research and feedback from people who have had the job, I will decide if I should negotiate with my insurance company about the update. I'd rather not have functions of my car disabled just so BMW can get away with this cock up.
Fitting a recognised alarm and getting them to approve my request to avoid the update; in writing should be enough.
