You know, I'm starting to rethink what BMW is trying to do with the 335is.

I think that this is a loss-leader vehicle, a trojan horse, a sales gimmick, a...well, I ran out of metaphors.
Basically, people get interested in the car, start pricing it out, say "oooh shiny!" but then reality kicks in and they realize that for just a little bit more they can have an M3.....

See where I'm going wth this?

BMW marketing, those wily little devils.

...i'm in the same camp... I have a 2007 and was thinking of another purchase... but is this "is" enticing enough?... I thought it over and if I do pull the trigger in the next month it will be a M-sport-LCI or LCI with all options, I will not track my car regularly if ever so overboost and re-mapping and 19" lighter wheels will not improve my experience... ... a, NA M3 used... fantastic deal now... I was at my local and I could have a used M6 V10 for ~50k....

I'm still in the 335is camp. I read a posting this morning from some user named "Alpina", and he summed my feelings up quite nicely, having come from an 08 M3-DCT myself...
The M3 has a fantastic engine, the sound is awesome, and the suspension with the electronic adjustment is excellent.....it was a typical natural aspirated engine and the real punch only came above 4000 rpm, so that in order to accelerate really hard you had to keep the engine in high revs. If you didn’t, most of the new diesels with their huge torque outperformed it on the motorway. Now, as much fun as it was to let the engine roar and have the slightest movement of the accelerator transmit into immediate action, the downsides were quite apparent: the noise level was too high for my taste on longer runs, if you do use the engine as it wants you to, the fuel consumption is really off the charts, and with the same options as the 335i it would have cost me around 20.000 EUR more, not to speak about the insurance fees that are much higher. So finally – no M3 for me!
Additionally, for me the 19-inch M3 run-flats with the tight M3 suspension gave a fairly rough ride. Bottom line: the M3 just isn't a daily driver, which is what I need. I am expecting a much smoother experience with the 335is suspension riding on the stock M-Sport 18-inch rims. Overall, the 335is is just a better fit for me.

No, because there is adequate cooling if the top is opened.

Tough Decisions

Priced out a loaded 335is convertible and the lease came to over $1,100 a month. He said it was because it was new and that BMW was playing with the MF and residual to clear the 2010 models. A 2010 M3 convertible was coming to about 1300. Both a little more then I was expecting to spend, but at under 200 a no brainer for me if I go for it.

My dilema is I currently have a 08 335i coupe manual with a lease up in June. Do I try to get an 2010 and eat a month or two of my lease? our extend my lease and hope rates will come down in July our august.

BTW when I tested a 335i automatic I found it very uninspiring coming from a manual. I didnt even feel the need to shift. But then tried the DCT on the M3, and wow what a difference. Not to mention the sound the M3 made when downshifting with the top down. I am quite curious to see what the 335is feels and sounds like with the DCT and louder exhaust.

So big question - how long does it take for the MF to improve in new model years?

Brian

Will it be easy for tuners to update the mapping on these cars with the overboost?? Also, Since the car is a little pricey it should be readily available to do direct swapping of parts, cooling fan, oil cooler, etc. that way people wont have to do alot of mods like with the older N54 engines, right? I am trying to figure out what my next car will be since I am turning in my 08 335I. If I am to get the IS I am just thinking how much it easier it will be to mod it? Anyone know of anything or heard about any tuners taking a look at this?

What is the code of the default wheels? I'm looking at the ordering guide and I can't find this. I can see that 2MP is a $1,000 option but can't find the standard code...

I really like the look of the front end. Got the chance to sit in the 335is @ NY Auto Show. Very nice!
