Thanks guys :-)

Out of interest, does your key need to be in the car the whole time during the install? I don't suppose you lock the car and go inside to let it do it's thing can you?

No, you can't leave it unattended otherwise the car sleeps. However, it will pick up from where it left off so you don't have to do it all in one hit. It's much faster from the USB as opposed to DVDs.

Whether it will give you seven-digit postcode if you didn't have it before I don't know. My understanding was that the operating software and the maps would need to be upgraded.

How could anyone possibly do that? How would I know if, for example, a new housing estate road appeared in, say, Aberdeen?

Please can anyone confirm that after the upgrade they had 7 digit post code searching when before they didn't?

Haha, well I have been told a lot of buildings have been changed to 3D etc on the new maps. I have 2012 atm which does have some 3D buildings. I didn't expect people to say the new londis at the end of their street is now down as a POI or anything

In other words I thought their may be some obvious major changes? For example 2012 added 7 digit post-code search for me which I didn't have on 2008.

it is all different depending on what firmware you have on your CIC, mine being 2008 this was the first version which only had part postcode, after updating with 2013 discs I now have 7 digit postcode however this isnt much use as its not like Tomtom's etc as you still have to select the road after so I don't really see the point.

The 2013 maps are far more detailed than the 2008 one I replaced however I have not seen any 3D buildings on mine, my car is due to go into BMW next week and I plan to have the CIC updated so I will see what changes then.

I have seen on some forums satelite veiws and full 3D on them but not sure what you need to get this.

Must be a firmware thing to then. I get the perspective buildings stuff and will navigate just to a postcode with no further input.

Many thanks Bomber.

I followed that thread and came across this:

http://tpb.fl.ax/nph-tpb.cgi/00/6874...554q5s32303133

Am I correct in assuming that I can download the files, copy onto a stick and then upload them direct to the car?

Will I need a code from the Guy called Sergev?

When it comes to uploading via USB you have to modify the files i believe to use 1 stick otherwise you have to use 2 separate sticks, there is a topic on GPS Underground otherwise ask Sergev.

You need the FSC code no matter what when updating the maps regardless of version, you supply him with you vin number and let him know that you are updating to i:e 2013, the code he generates is bespoke to your vehicle and map version so unfortunately every time a new map is released you need a new code

Yep. When you insert the update dvd/usb the first thing it will do is ask you for the code

My car is booked in next week for a service, I was going to have the full software update but I am going to hold on until its had its update for the OBD as who knows other stuff may get updated.

When I enquired regarding updating just the CIC I was told its just one big update for the car that anything that needs updating will get it.

I'll be doing this next week. Ordered a couple USB keys as the price of dual layer DVD media makes it stupid to go out and buy them when you can get a 16 gig key for 4 quid.
