other options... maybe?
I finally got a chance to open the throttle up a little today "anyone in the DMV know what I'm talking about" for the first time since my JB4 install. I was getting a cylinder 1 misfire. I replaced the coil and cleared the codes. It hasn't come back yet, but I am now getting a cylinder 5 misfire. I just "not even 2k miles ago" replaced 4, 5, 6 injectors, so I know that isn't the problem. could it be that I am running map 5 "until I get my DPs on" and it is trying to learn what is best suited for the mods I have? The only other thing I can think of is to replace the plugs. The problem with that is I do not have a socket for them "pretty new to the community and haven't had a chance to get all the specific tools.
My question: Is there a socket I could use that will work for removing the plugs for example a regular 3/4" 14mm plug socket and just use a telescopic magnet to pull the plug out? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

did you replace the coil on that cylinder 5 as well? And you should just buy the BMW spark plug tool for like $20 to remove the plugs. You'll also need a ratchet extension thing.

I replaced the coils. I am about to order a socket from BMS. I was just hopping there was a trick "to get by until it comes in" that someone on here has used that works.
EDIT: thanks for the quick feedback. I'm trying to get this fixed today, because this is my only day off this week, and I wanted to do some highway runs to get some logs for the JB4 on Thursday before work since it's supposed to be a nice DRY "no rain/snow lol" day. |

Swap coils on #5 w/ another coil pack, if misfire follows its the coils...might as well replace all 6 at this point. If misfire stays on #5 then its the plug...might as well replace all 6 plugs lol. And yes you will need the special 'thin wall' 14mm socket, the thin wall sockets at autozone etc. don't work (ask me how I know). BMS sells a good one.

OK so if the injectors are new and the coils are new that only leaves the spark plugs.
Pull the plug and inspect. Make sure it's not fouled and make sure it's gapped correctly. The GAP is what causes the misfire for many. As the plugs age the gap increases, which causes the misfire. IMO, adjusting gap is a band aid. Get some fresh plugs. |

for the diy socket you will just need to shave down the outerwalls of a normal 14mm sparkplug socket. Not even by that much- maybe a millimeter or 2. |

I guess I'll just have to stick to the Sunday driving "can't really say grandma... mine drives just as aggressive as I do, and she does it in a minivan" until the socket is shipped to me.
Thanks for the tip bigdaddyaaron |

what I mean by the last comment, is that I will just have to drive like a 90 year old woman. In quotations I mean I did not want to say grandma, because... what I wrote in quotations.

You can always take a 14mm socket to a machine shop with a Lathe and have them turn down the outer diameter. May be quicker if you are in a hurry and I imagine they could do iton the spot if they had an open manual Lathe. Dou t it would cost more then a few bucks pkus the cost of the socket.
