I was thinking the same thing. It's a car. Driving is what they do

Shit sorry Jeffro...I just realized you mentioned business trip.
I would not blame you for wanting to ask for advisement and it shouldn't be that you put business mileage on your personal vehicle, so I can definitely see the concern. Does your company reimburse you per mile, for wear and tear in any way, or could you expense a rental vehicle? |

I take my own car any chance I have. Doesn't matter if it is for work or pleasure. For some people it seems as if driving for work is not driving....Totally do not understand...Even if the job is pain in the butt, by taking my own car at least I can enjoy on the way there and back and not having to put up with rubbish rentals which only adds on the grief. |

Personally, if given the chance, I'd not only ask for mileage, but maintenance options (e.g. oil change or anything that breaks... Like if the WP/Thermo went out, there goes $1,000 while you're on company dime), take full advantage of that and be happy in your own car, which is less than a rental, dollar-for-dollar over the same period of time. Anything less and I'd rather put all that undercompensated wear-and-tear on a rental, and would rather let my S/O take it out every once in a while to make sure everything is up to par while I'm gone... My last rental was the Chrysler 200C which wasn't too shabby, but it better not be a bottom-feeding Hyundai.

However I do not see me doing that everyday as .53 a mile is not enough for maintenance cost/ wear and tear I know a sales rep which also uses his car all the time for trips but the company gave him a credit card for gas and repairs on his car so that is a win /win situation for him . He takes his car to the dealer regularly for any type of maintenance. |

As long as work is paying atleast some of if not any repairs it might need then go for it.
I think it actually benefits you. For example, your water pump will go. If it goes while you're away then lets say work splits the bill with you. You save a few hundred on a repair that was bound to be needed anyway. Oh, and I hate them, but buy a bumper guard or something for the longest part of the trip (assuming that the long part is one leg, etc Florida to NY). Then take it off when you're driving locally at your destination (again assuming thats the case)

Wouldn't you get 57 cents for each mile you drive in your 335i? That can rack up to quite a bit of money if you drive your car.

My company reimburses at whatever the IRS mileage rate is so for 2015 it's 57.5 cents per mile. It actually adds up when I do have to use my own car. The rate is high enough that we're discourage from using personal vehicles unless there's a reason we can't get a rental. For a 2 day business trip, it's always cheaper to get the rental for anything under 200 miles round trip. Most of the time I'm flying several states over then getting the rental, but on occasion we do drive from the office.

Everyone who understands a little bit about how cars work. Short trips (and by that you understand turning the car on, driving 5 minutes, turn car off) are very bad for the car.
Reason why you see so many lemons with 20 k miles and 10 years and so many good cars with 200k miles and 10 years. |

Right - and I'm not trying to troll as I own one too - but we're not talking about a rare and collectible car but rather a common and relatively affordable one. I'm just saying, if you like to drive it, drive it.

Indeed!! I get 17kr per 10 kilometers, which is roughly $2.20 per 10kilometers = 0,36 US cent per mile. And remember that our gas is about double prices compared to the US.
My BMW gets about 5000K´s/3100miles on it per month, usually more, in all weather conditions and its fine! 3-series in Sweden are two dime a dozen, since its a very popular companycar. You can normally get a Mercedes C/E/GLK, BMW 3/5/X1/X3 series or Audi A4/5/6/Q3/Q5 as a company car.. Usually with tdi or midrange gasoline inside what companies here specify as an OK price.. Then again a low end speced F150 truck is more the a fully speced 328i.

Your 335i isn't getting any better sitting in your garage. But more importantly, why miss all the driving fun for 9 months? Go get the car, drive it daily. With a big twin turbo smile on your face 😄
