I'm only a BMW owner of 1 week as of today, so take this for what it's worth... Official BMW response I believe is "the computer will tell you" and the 1-year free oil change. Many perform maintenance on their own nickel in addition to what is included with the 4-year warranty. The discussion goes on and on and on as to what individuals recommend. I plan to do a 1200 mile basic break-in service and oil changes more often with my E93.
One thing you may want to do is send a private email to Mike Miller (of Roundel fame) techtalk@roundel.org and ask him for a copy of his documents on "old school maintenance" and "break in service". They are not posted anywhere, but he was very helpful and I found them to be of great value in what BMW used to provide before service became free in the warranty, along with some of his practical recommendations. Net is, once service became included in the 4-year warranty, the computer indicates preventive service is needed a lot less often than what BMW recommended be performed before then. My perception and some others is technology did not change that much for the better overnight which would substantiate doing less preventive maintenance, but marketing programs and the need for BMW to maintain profit margins did. Hope that helps point you at what you're looking for. You sounded anxious in your bumps.
