With the cold weather in New England during the winter, is there any additive that I can add to the diesel fuel to prevent it from freezing in the fuel lines? I know that it might not freeze, but turn into a gel like substance.

I was told by BMW SR not to add cetane boost or any diesel additive because it will void my warranty, but how about cold weather additive?

I haven't had any issues with starting my 335d in cold weather because I always keep the car garaged where the temp is around 45 degrees. But when I go to work, it sits outside for around 9 hours in 10-20 degree weather.

As you can see from this: http://www.tdiclub.com/TDIFAQ/TDiFAQ-10.html , CT diesel should be good to -17C (about 1.4F). If you feel the need to go lower, there are many options.

According to the link you provided, I shouldn't worry about my diesel fuel jelling unless it falls below -1.4 degrees. Might be close tomorrow because the temp is suppose to drop to about 8 degrees, but it's still higher than -1.4 degrees.

Here in Toronto when I started my car up at 5:20am it was -19.5 degree Celsius (-3.1 degree Fahrenheit) and the car started with no issues at all.

I had a rough start today. Hesitation then a squeal then it started.

How long do you wait after you put the key in?

I rarely if ever use the key. I just press the start button.

You can just hold your foot on the brake and hit the start button right off the bat. If the glow plugs are needed then the control unit takes over before cranking the engine.

I saw the glow plug for like a split second this morning before it started.

I don't have comfort access. I have gotten the glow plug signal twice this winter.

Yesterday -21C all day, glow plugs light came on for 1 second than start no problem. I don't have Comfort Access and like said above, click the key in, press the brake and push start. If glow plugs are required it will delay the start but I don't have to hold on the start button.

BTW diesel was low at less than 1/8 of the tank (light was on)...

See what I do is put the key in wait for the Christmas lights to disappear off the cluster then start it up. I was told do this with my old TDi so it has become a habit now.

I haven't seen more than a half second blip of the glow plug symbol on the dash even when it's been 0F here.
