I am thinking about getting my first tune and going with Cobb. On an otherwise stock car, and I don't plan on doing any further mods, is it worth it on ca 91 gas? Will I at least be around 300rwhp/tq ? Also, what type of increased maintenance comes with owning a tune ? And lastly, any safety concerns running cob on ca 91 with no other mods.

Thanks.

COBB Stage 1 is designed to run on a completely stock 335i, because you're using 91 octane you just cannot use the Stage 1 Aggressive maps. Here is the Stage 1 Map Notes from COBB:

http://www.cobbtuning.com/v/accesspo...ORT%20v301.pdf

You can see that on Stage 1 Sport (w/ 91 octane), you're easily over 300 WTQ, probably right at 300 WHP. If you scroll to page 2, you'll see that Stage 1 maps "are intended for stock or unmodified vehicles." I'd recommend that you at least get a panel filter upgrade (K&N, BMS, aFe, etc.) to swap out the BMW OEM paper filter, give you a little better breathing a free up a couple ponies (If you can spend ~$900 on a tune, you can spend an additional ~$60 on a drop-in filter).

We do recommend that if you're taking the car in for service, to UNINSTALL the AccessPORT prior to taking it to the dealership. Then ReInstalling when you get the car back.

With all AccessPORTs, once installed to a vehicle, it will stay "married" to it until you decide to un-marry the AccessPORT from that vehicle. I'm sure I can say that we have a better track record than celebrity couples.
Danny - I've been searching for this info for a while, can you please reconfirm this? Does the ECU keep track of the last flash date as well?

So can a stock California car (with drop in air filter + my BMW PE), only run the "drive" map safely or is the "sport" map also a viable option?

You need to datalog to see what map works best for your car. Try running the sport map for a couple days(to let it adapt) and then do a couple 3rd gear pulls and see how the datalogs look. If you're unsure how to read datalogs then post up your csv file and people on here will help you. If it looks good then stick with sport. However, CAN fuel is absolute shite so more than likely you're to be stuck with drive.

Got ya, thanks for the help. I plan on getting the Cobb in the next few weeks, just wanted to make sure I'll be able to notice a big enough difference in performance over stock to justify the purchase.

I would suggest sending your logs to Robb @ Cobb rather then posting it on the forums, the Cobb support team is awesome and you know that they know what they're talking about.

If 91 octane is all you can get, then you DEF can't run the Aggressive map (requires 93+). Like rader1 said, once the COBB + drop-in filter are installed, run the Sport map (run the official OTS maps, don't use the Beta maps as a starting point) and do some pulls/dyno, data log & you can post them here and/or send them to COBB and you'll get plenty of feedback.

And do not worry about this^^ I run Stage 1 Sport as my DD map, my only real mod besides the COBB tune is my aFe intake. If I put my foot down the car takes off like a stabbed rat. Luckily I've got 93 in NJ, have a set of VRSF DPs + Forge DVs in my basement, shopping for a Helix FMIC & an ER charge and getting ready to call AKMotorsport to get everything installed so I can run the Stage 2+FMIC Maps. Hopefully (COBB, I hope you're reading this) the v40x maps will be officially released by the end of the month and I'll be able put the car & new map through its paces on my way to the Rallye BMW meet in Long Island

PS -- I promise I'll upload before (COBB Stg 1 + aFe intake) and after (COBB Stg 2, aFe, VRSF DPs) video once the install is completed so everyone can hear the difference. I'm really excited to hear the difference myself after every1s complained about how "raspy" the VRSFs are.

I 100% agree & realize that, and think the 335i could benefit from a deeper sound. I'm sure in the far future I'll get an axle-back exhaust (keep those secondary cats)

Thanks for the help, I'm looking forward to getting the Cobb in the near future. Maybe once in a while I'll mix in some 100 octane although not too often at $8/gal. btw, do you think the Cali 100 octane would still be garbage compared to east coast 100 octane, or would those be comparable?

Will COBB be coming out with their own METH Kit to go along with their OTS Meth maps?

There is no better kit than the Aquamist. Cobb would have no reason to try and compete with it.

Since I don't run race gas, I couldn't tell you. I would hope that b/c it is race gas tho, that a 100 OCT in NJ is 100 OCT in CA. You could try buying octane booster once in a while, comes in 30 point (+3 octane) and 60 point (+6) formulas. $8/gal is a bit steep & the octane booster you're supposed to toss a full bottle into a near-full tank of gas.

Every 10 points of octane booster you get +1 octane: so 30 point will bump you up to 94 octane + 60 point will bump you to 97 octane. Obviously, don't make it a regular habit of tossing that into your tank on a Stage 1 street car, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea once every couple of months/thousand miles.

You're correct about how it's rated. However, keep in mind that the higher octane the baseline fuel the less imporvement it will show. So ,if you gain 2 MON points when adding it to 89 you will see less than a 2 MON point gain when adding it to 93.

you may find some good shops that carry quality 100 octane (5 gallon drums). I have not tried it yet and or did any research. but call shops around your area and see what they stock for 100 octane and do some research. I did my baseline Dyno here (not much to choose from in Sacramento).,., http://www.forcefedperformance.com/ good guy, specializes in tuning big blocks. They Stock 100 octane and or upon request.

does it make sense to run 93 octane for an aggressive map? Sure i am going to try it once i get my COBB. just for the heck of it. May have to run at least two tanks to get the full benefit. $$$

here is my octane mix calculator... Just plug in your tank size and octane level.

Firmware updates, map downloads, and new ROM submissions should all be working now. Make sure you have the latest version of AP Manager installed too! APM 2.0.2.3 is the latest release (out of Beta).
