Camshaft

I have a 335xi I purchaded in Aug 07 and it has almost 22k miles - just brought it in for the 3rd time in 2 weeks and finally got the diagnosis of faulty/scored camshaft bearing ledges. The car also burns though oil - not sure if there is any connection?

Yes its related. You should get it fixed by the dealer asap. I had this problem come up after around 40k miles. Dealer fixed it no questions asked.

That people like me who only drive 7k miles per year may not run into these "defects" until we're out of warranty!

I would rather not run into them at all. But you can always drive a ton to expose any issues!

But no, I think we will be ok. My warranty runs out in June 2011, probably 30K by then? I drove 21K first year, then now I drive practically not at all. Not a bad thing, I'll take that.

I would invest in some drivetrain extended warranty if you plan on keeping the car for awhile.

Hmm I'd say between $1200-$2000...

Depending mostly on how much parts are (not familiar w/ BMW tax on engine parts) as well as how many hrs of labor the dealer would try to rape you for

I believe the forged intake crankshaft is around 1,000, plus there will be other misc parts and labor....I think around 2,000 sounds about right, unless they need to start replacing VANOS parts and the other cam....Then you are looking at closer to 4,000

A small percent could mean thousands of people from world wide sales. they say the same thing about the HPFP issues
