E90/91 LCI Halogen AE as DRL - Done!

Hi guys,

Just to let you know, this can be done without the harness that's talked about on the coding forum.

To get the halogen light angel eyes as DRL (on all the time) and still working as welcome lights, the following lines need to be looked at in the NFRM.

VERHALTEN_DRL_TFL
drl_s
DRL_TFL_MIT_BFD
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_NSW
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_BLK_V_GED
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_SML
aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_KZL
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_RL_BL_2
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_RL_BL_1
nicht_aktiv
DRL_TFL_MIT_RL_BL
nicht_aktiv

The red ones are the lines I had to change but I've copied the others just to make sure. Once this is done, just go into the OBC and enable the DRL - Voila!

Note that this is for cars with halogen LCI angel eyes, I'm not sure of the procedure for cars with Xenon lights but I believe it's roughly similar.

Did my main beam flash on alarm, beep on lock & unlock, digital speed in OBC, closing window doesn't stop when opening door and digital speed correction while I was at it.

Did the cable work with your car without modification?

Good to see you've coded successfully, it seems quite complicated when you research how to do it.

Yup, cable worked fine. I think for older cars you need to use the adapter you included but my E91 and E87 both worked fine as is, thanks again!

It looks a lot more complicated than it is, but point and click it's not.

You need a DCAN cable, a computer running xp and Ncs expert. You have to code the car.

Excellent mate.
We both have done the LCI headlights at same time.
I thought about this the other day, but was not keen (there is a reason for it ) Basically I want to have control on these manually, rather than having them on all the time, when car is on.

However I may require some information about coding, as I am not getting it right.
I will send you pm and hope you dont mind replying.
Cheers.

Replied. Coding can be difficult to start, but once it works for the first time, it seems pretty simple.

Can I know how does the original code looks like?

Did you mean we just need to delete/change certain line to the one in red?

So with this change, the AE will be lighted once the ignition is started?

Yep, the top bit used to read drl_h and the bottom, nicht_aktiv. Those are the only linesi changed in the FRM.

I have done many including beep on lock / unlock, digital speedometer, windows down with fob, but my NFRM is old module to have these done as DRL's.

The other thing, I wanted to do was to keep the cluster on all the time (used to it on my previous car) but could not do it on my E90.

Frob, give it a try and see if you can do it. Apparently I have NFRM1, and you should have NFRM2 or 3 in order to have DRL's and speedometer on all the time.

Happy coding!

Frob, Can you activate welcome light (i.e Lights on when locking or unlocking) ?
or is it only available on FRM3 / E92?

Yep I have welcome lights. The taillights, door handle lights and angels all come on when you unlock for about 15s or so. You can change them to whatever lights you want though.

That all came as standard though rather than me having to activate it.

Thanks for the info.

Funny enough Frob, I did that research last night.
After considering cost involved, risk, coding, and chaging VO, I put this porject on my
'To Do' list.
Thanks for your help mate. Really appreciate it.

Yeah, I reckon it'd be worth it. I'm not sure what FRM3 would give over NFRM(2) mind you?

FRM3 allows you to add 'Follow me home Lights'. It works when you press trunk button on the keyfob once.
Not worth of going for it just for that additional feature.

I thought I could do that by pulling the headlight stalk before I get out?
