Looking for some friendly help - moving out to California
Going for the big change.. I'm wondering if there was anyone here that would be able to guide me in the right direction and maybe even help me out.
I'm planning ahead, so bear with me. I am looking to move this summer (2013) from Michigan to the west side. My concerns are: 1. Finding the correct career. 2. Living expenses and finding the right location. 3. Finding a job for the lady. I'm coming from the health field with a major in health communications. I've had my fair share of experience over here, but need a change in scenery. I know that HMOs are large over in this area, like Blue Cross Blue Shield. Is anyone on here working in the health/medical field or know of anyone that would be able to assist me? I am looking for some advice on what kinds of things to look into and maybe if you could help me find a job. My second concern is the cost of living in Cali and finding a home to live in. I know the costs are up the rear, but if we can find a job, that won't be too much of an issue. We just need an apartment with garages in the suburb. Third, the lady will need a job too. She has a degree in advertising and PR. So, that may be easy to find, but difficult to get into. Let me know if anyone can help express some knowledge in our direction. It would mean a lot to us. Thanks, Sean.

Honestly isn't the biggest problem to me. Either one would be fine. I'm aware Socal is more... "bigger?"
Where ever a job lands me. I would hope Socal though..

Which side are you leaning more towards? Come out to Cali and spend a couple weeks in both parts to see how you and your lady would like it here.

I'm from the Bay Area and now living in SD, I love SF my hometown but its too expensive and crowded, IMO San Diego is much better weather and cheaper and not so crowded.
Hope u find a job. |

I agree with the above. Norcal and Socal are two completely different vibes. It's going to be up to you, because the people from the respective parts will obviously favor their area

NorCal and SoCal are both amazing places to live in. I've lived in both and frequently visit SoCal. I would suggest like another member did, come out here and visit both places and see which suits you best. This is a big move and you don't want to regret moving to somewhere you might not enjoy.
As for the scene, I think you're referring to cars. LOL. SoCal is definitely stronger and has some great quality as compared to NorCal. They have more frequent meets that you can attend as well. If you're referring to night life, both are comparable and have their pros and cons. As for the Economy, it will vary from place to place. If you want a place in NorCal near or around the Silicon Valley, expect to pay a lot even for a simple apartment. There are places that are affordable and in a nice area though, you just need to find them. I can't comment on SoCal's state of economy but hopefully someone will be able to chime in for you. My advice is to take some time off and come out two both places with your wife. Visit different places and check out the markets in both regions to see which meets your needs or expectations more. I'm sure some if not most of the members are down to meet up and show you around. Best of luck and hopefully we'll see you out here soon! -Marvin

I lived in norcal all my life up until college where I moved to socal. Orange County to be exact. I will always love norcal but ever since I moved to socal I really liked the change of scenery. I agree with others in that you should take a trip to both parts and see which one you like better.

yes a visit to both norcal and socal are needed for sure before you decide, i've spent long periods of time in both area of california (age 0-17 norcal 17-24 socal) and they are completely different worlds. when you visit socal make sure you visit la downtown and the residential areas to get a better feel, with oc it's largely residential so that won't be a problem, same with sd (well check out downtown gaslamp area for sure), in the bay check out the east bay area like fremont, san jose, and then check out sf for sure, but what's your budget for rent looking like? that will play a big factor on where you live in both socal AND norcal

Do you have other preferences in terms of things you would like to do, to learn, neighborhood demographics, city vs suburbia, food preferences (e.g. organic foods movement, cuisines styles), weather, etc? Just throwing random things to consider and we could help guide you.

come to socal. I currently work as an emt in the field as well as the company supervisor, we work pretty closely with hospitals and health care facilities, so i can see if anyone has an opening.
i would recommend coming to north oc.. brea, irvine, placentia, fullerton area.. cost of living isnt too bad, great area, not much traffic, near freeways if you need to go to downtown.. and still near the beach if youre feeling that. then again, ive never been to the bay |

Nor cal-ers say "hella" a lot. It's also colder there, even on the fourth of july. It's also a lot mellower.
I live in LA and traffic I realize can be brutal but I'm used to it. I too moved out here from the east (PA) partly for the mountain roads and terrific weather. Smog is depressing but makes for great sunsets. Your money definitely does not go too far here but definitely try to live close to your work so your commute isnt too bad. In LA, the San Fernando Valley is more affordable while the Westside is hip but costly. Anyways, hope you make it out, would lve to see your car in person! |

I'm a little biased towards the central coast, but it can be difficult to find employment.
I work as a medical rep. and may be able to give you some advice. Let me know what direction you would like to head as far as a career. Good luck.
