Cool noob questions concerning brakes.

i apologize in advance, but i've never owned a respectable car in my youth. all beaters that no work went into until absolutely necessary.

my brakes have recently began squealing and im wondering what the appropriate course of action is.

1. do i need new pads? or rotors as well? (no indication from the sensors yet)
2. i'm assuming that yellow shit all over my rotors is caked on brake dust... what's the best way to remove it?
3. how much will i be spending taking it to the dealer or should i look into a independent garage?

appreciate any and all help, fellas. thank you.

edit: oops, i thought i was in the general forum. moderator move this for me please.

brake noise isn't just one single thing. it could be a multitude of items in combination that cause noise.

what condition(s) do you hear the noise?

looks like you just washed your car. the "yellow $hit" on your rotor is a thin layer of rust. it'll go away when you start driving and apply brakes.

in before someone tells you wrong section.

That looks like surface rust (crappy phone pix)

About the squealing locate the sound front or rear, remove pads and apply anti seize on the sliding points where it touches the calipers. This common practice at the dealership i used to work at. Granted if you dont need pad replacement, this works 100% all the time every time.

the noise appears during light to moderate braking. everything is silent during heavy braking.

sorry if it looks rust colored in the picture, i assure you it's very yellow when you see it in proper lighting.

On it looks like you just finished washing your car.

I have the same problem as you but my car is a 328, so smaller brakes but I do get the squealing noise when trying to park or at very low speeds below 5-10 MPH coming to a complete stop.

Nothing a little anti-seize can't fix.

your brakes may have tendency to squeal when it's cooler out.
