GT-R, aint that quick.
Right, after all the hype and the like. Seeing a US car mag do a 11.5 standing quarter (Nissan press car) etc we all think its a ''Baby Veyron'' as chris harris once said.
Ive found a privately owned GT-R which has posted a 12.0@120mph. Somewhat slower. Bit like when the GT-R did a 7:30something at the ring, but when porsche got hold of one it was like 20 seconds slower..... Hope they havent hyped it all up too much.

Hmmm that is interesting, over hype is surely the worse thing Nissan could possibly do? Sad to see this
Though I don't like the looks of the GT-R I like the principals of it.

What were you expecting it to do the 1/4 in Carl ? Bearing in mind the car mag time is around a second quicker than a Gallardo and equal to many supercharged US E46 M3 running around 600 hp.

There have been quite a lot of claims of Nissan cheating (mainly by Porsche) and I suppose the arguments will continue even after the GT-Rs Launch in the UK next year. Having Driven a 911 TT (997) and a GT-R I can say that the GT-R is defiantly as quick as the 911 and the average driver would probably get more out of the GT-R as it is a lot more forgiving (also don’t forget the Topgear track time 8th fastest 1.19.7)

What concerns me more is the transmission failures over in the states with Nissan refusing to cover the warranty bill, in fact the service handbook has a page especially to record details of transmission replacement, just like any other regular servicing.

A US mag tested one which did a 11.5. Quote:
Yes fair enough, but considering an X50 996 turbo can do a 12.0 and the 997 slightly quicker it seems the GT-R is not what they have made it out to be.

12.0 1/4 is still bloody impressive for the GTR and in comparison to most other "baby" Super Cars it's very quick. I agree though that the 11.5 was a bit unbelievable in standard guise and was probably with the GT-R at 520+bhp at some silly altitude?
My old Cerbera 4.5 running only 410bhp ran 11.9's all day at Santa Pod and it weighed only 1200kgs, so if the GTR can get to within a tenth of that carrying all that weight then that's impressive and certainly quick. The best I've seen X50 996 tubbies run was 12.4-12.5, but not seen a 997 tub on the strip so can't comment. For the money they are tempting especially when compared against lesser cars (but still impressive) such as the V8 M3, ISF, RS4, C63 AMG.....easily quicker than all of them, faster round a track and all for approximately the same price... Jules. |

I never said it wasnt ballistic, just that its way off what Press cars have done. A mate has done 12.2 in an x50 and didnt even load the clutch up. 12.0 @120 possible. what was the trap of your TVR?

Agreed, the 11.5 is def optimistic at standard power. My trap was anything from 116-120mph a 11.9secs. Jules. |

Yes it is but goes to show what an impact getting a good launch and changing gears makes, I've got some runs at 12.3 with 118mph, some with 12.2 at 119mph (with less power), the lowest trap speed was 115.8mph at 11.9 secs. A standard Cerbera 4.5 is meant to have left the factory with 420bhp........but NONE of them have anywhere near this figure. When I bought mine it was running 340bhp and 340lb/ft (most are between 330-360bhp), with a bit of basic tuning and then improved Whirlwind Induction (designed by me ) we got the car upto 410bhp, with a decent exhaust (bigger bore) and linked decat pipes (plus refaced manifolds) we got the car upto 420bhp. A lot of 4.5' now run at the least a remap so will be putting out 390bhp as a minimum. Jules. |

Its been well documented that the 911 turbo is actually faster than the gtr in a straight line.
The GTRs raison detre is its chassis. All of the people who drive it say how much speed you can carry through the corners in comfort and how good the brakes are. Its not always about straight line speed. Corners and brakes are just as important. Ill have a second hand one when they are 35k in about 12 months in red saying that though by then 997 tubs will be 45k

Yes but standing quarters are about straightline acceleration.
And porsche proved the GT-R is no quicker around the ring either.

I understand your post now Carl. I thought you were refering to the 11.5 not being fast, now I see your refering to customer cars being around 12s. Mine goes in for some surgery in a few weeks with the aim somewhere around 11.5-12s.

I think the point is that Nissan are posting figures that are impossible to reach, am I right?
Which is dissapointing because the performance figures are very impressive truthfully so why lie about them. GT-R isn't my thing but I respect what they have done.

For the same amount of money as a GT-R? Achieving the same sort of thing?
911 (996) GT3 RS - far the superior car in everyway possible as it was built for a purpose and is not some clutchless automated gearbox and is not Japtastic, don't really get Japanese cars! Performance? My thing? Sure, these automated gearboxes are not my thing though Not that I would say no to a GT-R, just wouldn't spend my money on one! IMO performance isn't everything at all though. I maybe shallow but I like a good looking car too with lots of heritage.
