Ipad / Tablet
Thinking of getting one of these for the wife for her birthday and need a little guidance. She won't be a heavy user and will probably only use it for a bit of Internet Access and maybe the kids playing angry birds etc. We have a laptop which I mainly use for Net and MS Office functions. Wife mainly uses her Iphone to read Daily Mail celeb gossip etc but with the screen being so small it isn't great for prolonged use.
So I'm thinking of something to add to the laptop for her to use. Ipad seems the kinda default choice but not cheap, also of course the Ipad Mini which is more affortable. What the advantages / disadvantages between these two? And should we be thinking of some other brand of Tablet??? |

For that use I would consider a Nexus 7 - considerably cheaper at £199 for a 32 GB

If she is currently using an iphone I would say do not consider any other tablet other than the ipad as it will be instantly familar to use etc, plus apps etc will sync with each device as you download onto one or other device.
I have bought a number of cheaper tablets which I have either sold on or are lying in a draw because I end up going back to my ipad, yes it is more expensive than the others but you get what you pay for. A ford is still a car but I'm not about to change my BMW for one just because it is cheaper. |

I've got an iPad mini. It's brilliant.
I considered other options like the Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7. The problem for me is that I know I would have regretted not getting the iPad. The Kindle Fire HD is a good piece of kit though at just £159. |

It is because of familiarity with the Iphone that I would kinda think Ipad is the way to go I guess.
What about the comparsion between Ipad4 and Ipad Mini ? Is the extra cash worth it? |

I'd recommend an ipad retina - it absolutely stinks build quality (if that matters to you), I also have a Samsung galaxy tab but much prefer to use the ipad - just a better all-round experience in my opinon, Oh, and that retina screen!

2 of my brothers (one has iPad 3 the other has iPad 4) prefer the iPad mini. I'll be looking to upgrade to the iPad mini with retina display when it's available

Bought an ipad 4 before christmas, previously having the 2 and the retina screen is a massive must have. I didnt think it would be that much better but it is.
I dont know what the ipad mini has as an advantage apart from being smaller and lighter. My brother bought a couple for himself and his son and they are very nice but i think i prefer the ipad 4. Retina, faster processor and i prefer the larger screen as you see more content at higher definition. My mum got a kindle fire HD for xmas and whilst that has a great screen it didnt feel as intuitive as the ipad. The smaller screen also felt too small when browsing and reading content from the web. I just think the ipad is the perfect device to have around the house and the kids absolutely love it. Back when i bought the first ipad 2, you couldn't get games like peppa pig, hello kitty etc on the android devices so that was an immediate down point. It just seems that apple have a better array of applications (perhaps the playing field has evened out now)/ Remember with apple, if you decide on the mini, you can always take it back and swap it even if you used it providing it's within 14 days. |

Is the retina screen all about quality for viewing pictures or movies or does it have advantage for fairly normal web browsing and reading Daily Mail type celeb gossip.
Thinking the Wifi only version is just fine but again any advice, she has the Iphone to take out so can't really see why an Ipad would need to leave house. Reckon I will stick with Apple but the choice between Mini and Ipad4 is tough, is the screen on the mini ok for everyday use or do people find it a bit small. Also then does the physical size of the Ipad4 be a bit of a problem as its quite a bit bigger than the Mini? |

The mini is lighter than the normal iPad. I have both and now that I've got use to the weight of the mini I find the normal iPad a bit too bulky for carrying around!!..but the Retina screen is very good, but the screen on the iPad mini isn't half bad either. Easiest thing to do is go into an Apple shop and see for your self which you think is fits your needs.

If its staying in the house then the iPad 4 is the best option. My iPad mini fits in my pocket and goes everywhere I go.

The wifi only doesn't have GPS. That may not be an issue but just wanted to make you aware of it.

The mini has more PPI than the ipad 2 so it sits somewhere in between on quality. Along with the screen the ipad 4 is just that little bit quicker at doing things and surprisingly i got into gaming on it too. Fifa, real racing, nfs etc. The GPU handles those games better and i believe it might have more ram. Not sure about the mini battery life but ipad 4 lasts way longer than the ipad 2. You probably wont notice an awful lot of difference in the CPU, GPU and ram. As advised perhaps best to get to an apple store and see what you think of the ergonomics, size and weight. |

My iPad (1st gen) decided to lose wireless just after a year. Apple in Switzerland don't play ball - I would have to pay about 80% of the price for a new one to get it repaired. Now a paper weight.
I haven't gone back. Got a nice wee Android device. I'll agree, when I bought the iPad nothing could touch it. And I would still recommend an iPad to many - an 80+ year Aunt is delighted with hers, after I recommended it to her. But the Android devices are surging onwards. And being able to simply store files/images/movies/downloads directly onto the device (or large SD card) is a godsend compared to the locked-down iPad. Friend is receiving her Google Nexus 10 this week - can't wait to have a wee play with that. The screen resolution of 2560x1600 (300ppi) is just ridiculous. D.

I bought my daughter an Ipad mini after New Year and she is over the moon with it.However on using it I realised it was not for my old eyesight!! I have since bought an Ipad 4 with retina display and 3G.It is considerably heavier than the mini but appears to be much faster and the Retina display is fantastic. If she is only going to be using it at home I would go for the IPad 4 wifi model.
There does not seem to be anywhere discounting ( a bit of price fixing I think!!) About £260 for a mini and £399 for an Ipad 4
