definitely check out pricescope.com. after gaining the knowledge of what to look for and where to buy, you will feel more comfortable about spending the kind of money that you plan to spend. there are plenty of online retailers that are reputable to buy your engagement ring from. i would recommend jamesallen over bluenile because jamesallen can scan pictures of the diamond under different scopes so you can look at them as if you were at a store.

It's all about quality, but some specs are just indestinguishable with the naked eye.

First, you want an "Excellent" or "Flawless" cut. That has more impact on the brilliance of the stone than anything.

Next you want color - D/E/F range is very nice, but unless you have something to compare with, G/H stones will look no different. If you're really good, you may be able to notice a little bit of color in the "I" stone, but Jane Q. Public can not.

Last is clarity. Don't get caught up here. An inclusion can be a mineral impurity, or uncrystalized carbon. If the stone has a chip, fissure or "feather" it will be called out on the certificate, stay away unless you really know what you are doing. These are not common in VVS or VS stones, but sometimes may be found in SI stones.

VVS - you need a microscope to see the inclusion
VS - you need a loupe to see it.
SI - you can see it with the naked eye, but you need to look damn close, and it gives me a headache.

Seriously, who is going to look at the ring with a loupe, let alone a 'scope???

Go for an SI1, and work with a jeweler to find one that has an inclusion that can be hidden by the prong of the setting.

Once you settle on Cut, color and clarity, size is what it is.

If you can find a reputable online vendor, the price will always be cheaper to buy online. For my wife's engagement ring, I bout it from www.bluenile.com. They are one of the largest and more reputable companies out there. They sell their diamonds at a lower cost because they don't have the overhead cost, and the quality are better as well,....it comes with GIA certs as well.

After buying the diamond, I had it fitted into a "temporary" setting, which I used to propose. Afterwards, I had her pick out the design that she really likes, and had a custom setting made for the diamond. Overall, it was the less-expensive way to go and she got the ring that she wanted. It eliminated the guess work out of the whole process, and the quality of the ring was much better.

The following were the specs and price for the ring:

Princess Cut / 1.85 ct / signature ideal cut / F color / vvs1 - cost $12,000
Custom Design Setting in Platinum - Cost $4,500

Total cost was slightly over 17k.

That's a VVS1 F 1.85 ct - it's expensive. Thing is, I could set it down next to a stone of the same cut, SI1 H 1.85 ct and you'd have a hard time telling the difference.

Most of us have been hurt by women and in return we have hurt women too. As humans we have to forget and fogive and move on. Some people don't know how to do it or it takes a long time for them to comes to grip with life.

I am glad that you are looking for a ring. I did went to Spence and I found out thaey are the most expensive out of all the places I went to. I know it is some times tough to buy online. I will advice you to do the same as what I did. Find the Diamond from a Store and then try to shop for a similar one Online. When I found the Diamond at Bluenile I called up the first jewellery store I went to and told them the Price difference. It was well over 3K. They called me back and drop the price by 1K. I went back to them and told them that I will give them 1K more than bluenile. They counter offered me and said 1500 more than Blunile. Once I know the price difference I wasn't ready to pay more than 1K difference so I told them that I will buy from Bluenile.
I am sure you could use similar tactics.

No I haven't done that yet.
We are going to the mountains in about couple of weeks and then we are going on the gondola ride first thing in the morning so that we can see the sunrise and I am going to propose to her at that time.
