E91 - rusty tailgate!

Got a shock when I opened the glass on my tailgate today and noticed a small patch of rust emerging on the upper edge below the wiper motor. Heard of similar on E46/E39 Tourings but not so far on E91s. Has anyone experienced similar?

No previous damage / stone chips etc. I assume water has got in behind the seal and combined with the muck that tends to congregate there.

I am hoping it will be covered by the 12 year corrosion warranty (it's a 55 plate) - not got a full dealer history but all servicing fully up to date and last vehicle inspection was done at a dealer - not sure if that's a factor.

Any thoughts / opinions?

If I remember rightly the warranty only covers if it's gone through the metal not surface rust which that probably is.

Yes I've heard that but I'm not sure how you can distinguish between surface rust and rust that has penetrated? Is it just a matter of time? Assuming it is not from accident damage / stone chips etc then why does it matter?

Anyway, going in to dealers tomorrow to be assessed. Fingers crossed.

Dealer has confirmed as a valid claim - just need to wait for BMW to approve and then get it sorted.

All sorted by the dealer - a repair rather than new tailgate but looks like a good job, time will tell.

Good that they fixed it.

Hopefully just minor surface rust, as once rust has set, it always seems to come back.

Nice one!Any quibbling from the dealership as I'm surprised that they didn't try to weasel out of it-especially with an older car...

Took a bit of chasing after initially taking the car in (stuck between service dept, bodyshop and BMW UK), but in the end no quibbles - I think it is a 12 year anti-corrosion warranty so no reason why they should really.
