SUGGESTION - Classified Rules

I have noticed a few threads recently that have resulted in disgruntled forum members thinking they have secured an item only to be beaten to it by another forum member.

Would it be a good idea to have some rules for the classifieds?

e.g. Interest in an item must first be registered on the thread, not via PM? This was everyone knows where they stand?

Thoughts?

Do you think a 50% cut of the sale price is asking too much?

true but ultimately its up to the seller to sell to whom whoever he wants to.

as you may get some one call dibbs but say he cant pay til next week and come next week deal falls through! seller is left in lurch and could have sold to others that are interested.

Yes but I would assume that the buyer is able to pay as per the sellers request. Ie when the seller wants and via sellers preferred method. Otherwise you could get the situation where say 3 items are for sale and half a dozen people pay by pay pal as happened in another thread. Posting on thread then sorting everything else via pm is used on many other forums.

If i sell anything on here, i'll choose who I sell it to, not whoever posts first.

I'd rather sell an item to a regular visitor than some random whose first post is calling dibs

My suggestion is all dealings are posted on the classified thread, NOT first to post buys.

In that case, what's the point?

jimmylimmy stated that he will pick and choose who he will sell the item to, so regardless of when you post declaring your interest...there's still no assurance that you will get the item.

Seems to defeat the point of knowing where you stand if you ask me...

there is nothing wrong with replying to a for sale thread with "PM sent". I just dont think that should stop anyone else sending me a PM with their interest.
The first to post could have pm'd me with an offer, not an intention to pay the full asking price.....

we've seen bun fights before where someone was selling an iphone and poster A pm'd the seller with a lower offer, poster B pm'd with an offer of the full price, seller sold to poster B and poster A got mad cos he missed out

The most recent issue was IMHO caused by the seller taking payment from too many people when he should have replied to at least one person "all sold pending payment"

There is nothing wrong with the way its done now, you snooze, you lose. You try and haggle, you take the risk that someone else pays full price and it gets sold from beneath your feet

But all haggling etc could be done on thread. Item goes to first to offer asking not first to offer.

But at least when done in public everyone knows where they stand. It makes the process more transparent.

First to pay the price that the seller wants is the way it is now and nothing wrong with that. Too many people promise they will buy and pay soon etc then change their minds. Whoever is first on the scene with the right price and pays should be the buyer.

It can be made better. Put offers in on thread and close after 24 hrs from first bid. Then seller chooses. Seller should be fair about it if they are using the forum to flog stuff. Buyers should have an opportunity to have a fair crack at buying anything on here.

Bids can include info on speed of payment etc, or how big your knockers are etc.

I have implemented a rule on my Old Skool Forum that any for sale article without a clear starting price is removed without warning. Displayed in large red letters it is amazing how many still try it on. Only once, though.

Thinking being that the forum should be to the benefit of true normal members and not [E-Bay, Del-boy] traders freeloading adverts. True sellers know exactly what they would take. Stops a lot of the E-Bay style make me an offer dancing.

Clearly stating a starting price seems to be becoming the norm now on many car Forums.

On AVForums, a price is needed or the thread is taken down.

only people interested in the product can post.

price negotiation is done on the thread, but payment details are PM'd.

not saying its the greatest technique, but it works for them. i've bought a few things off there.

AV Forums is pretty much the norm I would say..... The likes of HotUKDeals go way too far (can't advertise elsewhere, 1 day ban for missing one of the million other little rules etc) but we prob don't have their volume yet anyway.

I'd say, state a price to begin with, state that you want it in the thread (or haggle and risk losing it) then take it to PM for payment.

There will always be the odd member who tries (and those who accept) efforts to gazump another buyer, but they are rare and will soon be found out by regulars of the community.

Plus, with an asking price stated from the offset, any would be buyers can either declare their interest or haggle offer in the thread for all to see... Assuming there is no other personal or historic reason as to why the seller wont deal with that buyer, if the asking price is offerred, then its deal done... Right?

As for commenting in for sale threads.... Well I am not against it... I think that the 'good luck' comments are just as irrelevant as 'constructive criticism' though so it should be all or nothing. One shouldn't simply be able to cherry pick which comments stay/go just because they like some but not others.

Regards
Matt
