Question Software Upgrade

G'day all,

I'm looking at installing a combox into my June 2010 build e92 LCI 335i Msport.
I have been told that I will need to upgrade the software on my vehicle to enable all the features of the combox. (Internet & BMW Live).

Can someone tell me what is involved & how much the Stealers are likely to charge?
Has anyone done this in Australia?
& what the f**k is BMW Live & do we have it in Australia?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, that's who told me that I will have to upgrade my vehicle software to a later version.
To be clear, I am not talking about the combox software but the general vehicle software. Can you help with this?

yep, 100% Either way, you have a 2011 car, your CIC system will be running the latest software anyway, and will accept the combox. More likely than not, you wont even have to code it

Thanks Luster.
Patryk tells me "If your car software has not been updated since the car was built the Internet/BMW Live will not work.
You need the software from March 2011or later."
(My car was built June 2010)

He sent this information after my enquiry for the PnP Combox.

Hey THE335 - really keen to see how this goes for you. I have a July 2010 build too and I definitely would be up for doing a combox ugrade too.

How would we get the software updated? Dealer only? - it'll probably cost a few hundred then

How much did Patryk quote you for the box and I wonder if it's a straight swap in?

Do you have the 8" screen? (I think that's standard in a 335 though?).

Anyways - good luck and let us know how you go!

Well,

you have only 2 options.

You can bug Advan to get the fibre optic cable (MOST bus) for their autologic so they can update your car.

OR

You will need to go to the dealer.

We shouldn't update your CIC through the ODB, as it takes too long and is risky. It'd be about 2 hours workshop time from BMW, Advan would be much cheaper (if you can convince them to get the cable).

Once it's updated, I can help you code it

G'Day Gester,

Still trying to find out where to get the software upgrade & how much?
Price for Combox PnP is on Bimmertech website. (The price includes delivery worldwide). I already have the 8" screen, bluetooth, USB plug in console & extended music (6FL i think) so installation is very simple. Unplug & replace existing box with combox, it's that easy i believe.

I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again Luster.
At least I have a starting point now!
Lets see if Advan is willing to come to the party.

Update;

Today I spoke with a BMW Tech who advised as follows;

Because I installed the BMW Performance Power Kit in August 2011 my software is updated. He continued to say that the entire vehicle software is updateded when the PPK is installed.

Can anyone confirm this?

Is there somewhere in the vehicle menu that I can confirm if I have March 2011 software or original June 2010 software?

All help appreciated.

I'm confused, you spoke directly with a BMW Tech who told you the facts... and now you are on a forum asking 'users' for their opinions...hoping to validate the facts???

Trusting is good......checking is better!

There are people on this forum with previous experience that could be valuable. For example I used your DIY for my Performance Grille install. Thanks QLD. I watched your questioning of the vendor recently for the 2012 map update & your comments after you installed the update, because of your positive experience I too got my maps updated. Thanks QLD.

The reason I asked for confirmation of what the Tech advised is because I don't understand the correlation between the engine management & navigation. Is it the same computer & therefore it's likely it was updated? Or is there a different computer for engine management in which case why would BMW update the navigation computer when installing the PPK?

Further, if I need to update my vehicle software to install the combox then most likely I wouldn't proceed. Combox alone is approx $650.00. Combox & software update is $650.00 + Stealer fees for software update. Not sure that it's worth paying that much for album art.

Thanks for your comment QLD & thanks for your assistance on this forum.
